Anime fans just got their first look at a brand new film based on the work of the creator of Chainsaw Man.

Look Back is a film that will be the directorial debut of writer and animator Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who’s worked on projects like Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and the Academy Award-winning film The Boy and the Heron.

The film is based on the 2021 manga one-shot of the same name by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the eccentric creator of hit manga such as the one-shot Goodbye Eri, Fire Punch, and the world-renowned Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man was the first of his works to receive an anime adaptation with its debut in 2022. The series also has a movie in the works that will cover the manga’s Bomb Girl Arc, though there’s no word currently on when the second season will arrive.

Going off the trailer alone, Oshiyama’s adaptation masterfully translates Fujimoto’s distinct art style into animation, combined with very vibrant colors and excellent voice acting courtesy of Yumi Kawai and Mizuki Yoshida as Fujino and Kyomoto respectively.

Viz Media’s synopsis for Look Back reads:

“The overly confident Fujino and the shut-in Kyomoto couldn’t be more different, but a love of drawing manga brings these two small-town girls together. A poignant story of growing up and moving forward that only Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, could have crafted.”

Look Back releases in Japanese theaters on June 28th, as of now there is no word on an international release.
