Filming of 'Captain Marvel' Seems Like It Will Most Likely Take Place Overseas

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel 2, starring Brie Larson, who will be reprising her titular role from 2019's Captain Marvel, which grossed $1.13 billion worldwide, will be directed by Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming Candyman film, which itself is a sequel to the 1992 Candyman film taking place in modern times. Her credits also include the award-winning indie Western drama film Little Woods starring Lily James and Tessa Thompson. Captain Marvel 2 is written by Megan McDonell, whose credits include TV’s Normal People. The previous directors from the original Captain Marvel, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will likely be helming the Ms. Marvel series for Disney+.

As usual, it is difficult to tell all the details of upcoming Marvel films since they are good at keeping certain things under wraps. Fans can only guess and formulate theories regarding the plot of Marvel Studios' upcoming films. It is currently unknown what the story of Captain Marvel 2 will be, other than it being adapted from Secret Invasion, Marvel’s big comic book storyline from back in 2008, two years after their big hit Civil War. Secret Invasion is a Marvel crossover storyline that ran for eight limited series issues with tie-ins to several of Marvel’s other titles, with the story involving a group of aliens known as the Skrulls, who are capable of shapeshifting so that they can pose as other people. On the big screen, the Skrulls were introduced in the first Captain Marvel film. The original comic book storyline reveals that they have secretly replaced many of Marvel’s superheroes with impostors over years. We got a glimpse of something reminiscent of this when the Spider-Man Far From Home post-credit scene revealed that Nick Fury was at one point replaced by a Skrull, though the original Nick Fury was okay with this, since he ordered it. Captain Marvel 2 will be featuring Kamala Khan, whom Marvel fans have known as Ms. Marvel. In the comics, she has inhuman genes. This seems to be a very good clue about the future, when Marvel Studios may re-introduce the Inhumans, which Marvel TV failed to execute back in 2017.

Due to COVID-19, Hollywood was forced to shut down for several months. Marvel Studios was no exception, being forced to shut down their productions. As Hollywood is being re-opened, Marvel Studios has begun to prepare to film again, as well as continue development of other Marvel projects. This month saw the announcement that Nia DaCosta would direct the film, and the studio is gearing up to continue working on it.

Now, there is apparently some insider information from Charles Murphy of Murphy’s Multiverse, who made a report that Marvel Studios had registered Captain Marvel 2 with a production company in the UK. This seems to indicate that Captain Marvel 2 will be filmed there, at least partially. There is also a possibility that some of it could be filmed elsewhere in Europe as well. Captain Marvel 2 is expected to film in spring 2021 or early summer 2021, of course, depending on whether or not there are any further delays related to the coronavirus.

The previous Captain Marvel film’s production primarily took place in California due to its Film and Television Tax Credit Program, which, according to Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, "not only will be able to streamline our production process for this and other films we’re working on concurrently, but we’ll have more time to spend with our families.” More than likely, this also helped Captain Marvel earn at least $20.8 million in credits due to the program.

With coronavirus still being a present danger in the United States, Hollywood productions seem far more keen to film in the UK and Europe than ever before. In other words, there is very little doubt that Captain Marvel 2 will most likely be joining the other Marvel Studios productions in the UK, such as Ant-Man 3, and Moon Knight. Captain Marvel 2 is planned to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
