Margot Robbie Says We Could Be Seeing "New Sides" Of Harley Quinn In 'The Suicide Squad'

This past weekend was DC FanDome, and the internet is abuzz with news of upcoming DC releases. FanDome brought us news of upcoming movies, games, comics, and TV content, unveiling trailers for various titles: Gotham Knights, a new video game featuring Batman heroes Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood; Zack Snyder's Justice League, the highly-anticipated re-cut of Justice League from director Zack Snyder set to release on HBO Max next year; and Matt Reeves' The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson.

While we did not receive a trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, we did get behind the scenes footage, and there is already a ton of hype for the film, with much of the buzz surrounding Margot Robbie's character Harley Quinn. As of right now, Robbie's Harley Quinn is one of the most recognizable characters in the DCEU, having appeared in 2016's Suicide Squad, this year's Birds of Prey, and now James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, set to release next summer.

This will be Margot Robbie's third go around playing Harley Quinn. While 2016's Suicide Squad received poor critical and audience reception (no doubt inspiring the soft reboot from James Gunn), Harley Quinn was easily the most popular character coming out of the film. This earned her a leading role in this year's Birds of Prey, and while the film opened to underwhelming box office success, it was, overall, a hit with critics and audiences alike and spurred even more excitement for further appearances of Harley Quinn. Robbie will be one of the few cast members to appear in both 2016's Suicide Squad and next year's The Suicide Squad, which has raised questions from fans about her role in the film and whether we may get to see even more from the character than we have already.

In a question in preparation for DC FanDome, Robbie was asked about how she enjoys playing the iconic role. She talked about how much she enjoys playing Harley and how we can expect to see a side of the character that we have never seen before:
"I always have such a ball playing Harley Quinn. Every time I've done it I learn new things about her and this movie is no different. When Harley is put in a group with different people or a different place you're going to see different aspects come out of her personality depending on how she feels about these people or the things she's doing. So you'll get to see new sides of Harley, again. She's in a new group of people, a big group of people. It's insane, as always."

It is exciting to hear that Robbie expects to show new sides of her character in the upcoming film, and given the popularity of Harley Quinn in general, many are even wondering whether we can expect to see a Birds of Prey sequel after her appearance in The Suicide Squad. Robbie was an executive producer on the first Birds of Prey film, and while she has expressed interest in doing a sequel, nothing has been confirmed by DC. As the love for the character in 2016's Suicide Squad was part of what drove DC to give Harley her own spin-off film, we can only hope that the same thing will happen again. If Harley Quinn is once again a big hit in The Suicide Squad, hopefully we will see another Birds of Prey movie, or, at the very least, further appearances from Harley in even more DC titles down the line.
