Chadwick Boseman Reportedly Recorded Lines for Marvel Studios' Animated Anthology 'What If...?'

The death of Marvel Studios star Chadwick Boseman shook the world. His unexpected death at the age of 43 from colon cancer, something that many people did not even know he was facing, caused a shockwave of disbelief, heartbreak, and tragedy. He had several major roles (such as Jackie Robinson in the baseball biopic 42), but to most people, he will always be the powerful ruler T'challa, also known as Black Panther, of the fictional country Wakanda.

We had seen Black Panther before in Captain America: Civil War, but his standalone film Black Panther was a huge success, garnering Oscars for Costume Design, Production Design, and Original Score, on top of being the first superhero movie to gain a nomination for Best Picture. T'challa quickly became one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, the future is unclear. Black Panther 2 had been announced, but without its anchor in Boseman, who knows what will happen there? Even if the studio found a way around it, the film could suffer severely for his loss, as some of the audience would not be able to get into the film as much as they did with the first one. A huge hole would be front and center in the film, one that could only be filled by Boseman himself.

However, that does not mean that we have seen the last of Black Panther.

It has been reported that Boseman recorded lines for the upcoming Disney+ project, What If...?. It is the first animated production put out by Marvel Studios, so the fact that we might once again see Boseman as Black Panther through that is a rather exciting one. He held his own against Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, and Chris Evans' Captain America, and was overshadowed by none. To know that we have not seen the very last of him in that role is comforting on some small level.

However, the extent of his recording work is currently unknown. Just the rumor that he did record lines does not mean that he recorded a lot of them. It could mean that he recorded half an episode's worth, or that he completed several episodes. It is hard to say, and it is especially difficult to say what would happen if he did not record everything. Would Disney hire a sound-alike? Would they cobble together a performance from what they did have? It is difficult to say right now. Both are dangerous prospects, as it could take the audience out of the story if it is obvious that it is not really Boseman performing the voice in some sections. To Marvel fans, Chadwick Boseman is Black Panther. So to see an official Marvel Studios production without him could very well be highly alienating.

Nothing can truly fix the tragedy of Boseman's premature death. For film fans around the globe, we will always have the performances of the movies to remember him by. If we get to hear him one last time in What if...?, it will hopefully bring some closure and be a worthy sendoff for such a powerful person. Either way, we will miss him and what he brought to the MCU.

Wakanda forever.
