Ewan McGregor Is More Excited For The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Than He Was For 'Attack Of The Clones' And 'Revenge Of The Sith'

Though it is not coming to Disney+ until 2022, Star Wars fans are excited about the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, especially since Ewan McGregor, who played that character in the prequel trilogy, is returning to the role. We know that it is set eight years after Revenge of the Sith and is, at the moment, intended to be a standalone season. Ewan McGregor spoke with Empire Podcast about his enthusiasm over the upcoming series.

“I'm more excited about doing this one than I was doing the second and third one that we did before. I'm just excited about working with Deborah Chow [director, who also directed episodes of The Mandalorian], and the storylines are going to be really good I think. I'm just excited to play him again. It's been long enough since I played him before.”

It seems that McGregor was not as excited to do Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith as he was to do this show, and The Phantom Menace, for that matter. Given that The Phantom Menace was his first Star Wars acting experience and that he was set to play an iconic character in that film, it is understandable that he would have been very excited to work on that one. Perhaps feedback from viewers regarding that film may have affected his excitement for the next two prequels. In the interview, McGregor continued to talk about the general consensus regarding the prequel trilogy:

“You know, our films weren't much liked when they came out, by my generation who loved the first ones. I think people of our generation wanted to feel the way they'd felt when they saw those first three movies when they were kids, and George [Lucas] wanted to take our ones in a different direction, he had a different idea. It was tricky at the time, I remember. But now, all these years later, I'm really aware of what our films meant to the generation they were made for, the children of that time. They really like them. I've met people who, they mean a lot to them, those films, more so than the original three, and I'm like, 'Are you kidding?'”

Indeed, recent years have shown a rise in positive reception for the prequels thanks to fans who watched them as kids and finally got to voice their opinions on the internet. The films may not be perfect, but they got a new generation into Star Wars, which was George Lucas’ intention. McGregor went on about the tech side of things:

“The first three [Star Wars films] I did were really at the very beginning of digital photography. We had a camera with an umbilical cord to a tent, it was like back to the beginning of movies where the camera didn't move very much because there was so much hardware attached to it. Now we're going to be able to really create stuff without swathes of green-screen and blue-screen, which becomes very tedious for the actor.”

It is evident that Ewan McGregor is very much looking forward to playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again. For years, he had been saying that he would like to come back, and he was not allowed to say anything in interviews that would reveal the development of this project. For the past year, since the announcement at D23, fans have been very excited about this series moving forward. Some have argued that Ewan McGregor’s portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi was the best aspect of the prequel trilogy. Naturally, we might be able to expect that this talented actor will be able to portray the character very well once again.
