Giancarlo Esposito Talks About 'The Mandalorian' Villain Moff Gideon And Force-Sensitivity

Moff Gideon with the Darksaber in The Mandalorian

Moff Gideon is one of the more memorable characters on the Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Giancarlo Esposito portrayed that villain in such a way where he seems like someone with whom one can try talking things out, but not without sacrificing the air of intimidation that comes through his performance. When season 1 ended with Gideon wielding the Darksaber, viewers’ minds were blown. Those who were familiar with that weapon via its depictions in the animated shows Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels got excited to find out how the Darksaber ended up in Gideon’s hands. The last time that we had seen the weapon was when Sabine Wren, who had stolen it from Maul, gave it to Bo-Katan in the final season of Rebels, which was set a decade before The Mandalorian.

Since the season 1 finale of The Mandalorian, there has been speculation as to whether or not Gideon is able to use the Force. In an interview with SYFY Wire, Giancarlo Esposito actually addressed the possibility of Moff Gideon being Force-sensitive:

"I say that’s a possibility. I can’t say for sure that that is completely the truth, but look, we’ve seen him come out of his TIE fighter, and we’ve seen him also with the Darksaber. I would have to say that there’s some surprises coming down the pike in regards to the connection he has to the Force. You don’t quite know where he fits in there, but he certainly has some information that we don’t that connects him to the old school."

While being capable of wielding a Darksaber may not necessarily indicate that one is Force-sensitive (The Clone Wars character Pre-Vizsla and the lack of evidence that he is Force-sensitive come to mind), it is interesting that Esposito is actually outright talking about the possibility. Another thing that is odd about what he said is the part about him saying he cannot for certain say that this is completely true. This is just me speculating, but it is almost as if he has not been told whether Gideon is Force-sensitive. For all we know, there may be no outright confirmation of his Force-sensitivity in season 2, and it could be a thread that gets picked up on and clarified in season 3, almost like how we were not quite sure for a while whether or not Finn from the sequel trilogy was Force-sensitive.

Then again, it is also possible that Esposito knows the full picture of what is going on with Gideon, but he is just not allowed to say too much just yet. It is surprising that he is able to say as much as we got within this one quote, but at the same time, it does not paint the full picture for is. There is still an air of mystery pertaining to whether or not he is Force-sensitive and to what extent. Can he move rocks? Can he Force choke? Can he shoot lightning? We just do not know yet. Hopefully, we get some answers in the upcoming season.

The Mandalorian season 2 is set to premiere October 30 on Disney+. Given Esposito’s track record, it is safe to say that we are in for another compelling performance from him as Din Djarin travels with and protects The Child. The show has introduced some really interesting new characters to both casual and lontime Star Wars fans, and it should be fun to be able to see some of them again as the story moves forward on the small screen. Before we know it, we will be seeing Gideon and the rest again.
