'The Mandalorian' Will Be At Least Four Seasons Long, According To Giancarlo Esposito

The Mandalorian has received much critical acclaim, and some of that is due in part to the stellar performances provided by the actors on the series. Giancarlo Esposito is no exception to this. People have enjoyed his performance as Moff Gideon, who can be menacing in his own way. He especially seemed menacing when he held the Darksaber in his hand at the end of the season, thus sparking online discussion of where the show will go and what more we might learn about the series’ villain.

On the night of the 72nd Emmy Awards, Giancarlo Esposito spoke with People about the show and the amount of depth that it has, providing a clue as to what we can expect as far as the longevity of the show:

“We’re living in a universe that is huge and there’s so much to explore, so I think this show is going to lay the ground work for the depth and breath that’s gonna come in season 3 and season 4, where you’re really gonna start to get answers.”

This seems to confirm that The Mandalorian is designed to last at least four seasons. The fact that Esposito knows this would make one think that he is set to remain on the series for that long. It is not something that I myself considered, but thinking it over, I suppose it is possible that he would not be defeated easily within season 2. If he is a formidable foe, he could be a series-long villain. It might be potentially underwhelming to tell his whole story in season 2 and then toss him away, moving on to some other villain.

Another part of his comment that is very interesting is the mention of answers. Fans want to have everything answered right away, but it makes sense to keep the fans guessing so that they may continue watching. It feels very possible that we might not get Gideon’s entire backstory told until we get through seasons 3 and 4. Some fans might feel impatient if that ends up being the strategy, but if the people behind the series can keep it interesting, then it might be worth it to wait a while before getting rewarded with more Moff Gideon information.

At this point, fans may be wondering whether The Mandalorian may go beyond four seasons. Some shows like Babylon 5 and Breaking Bad have shown that it works to have five seasons that feel like they were planned from beginning to end. Other shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, and Agents of SHIELD went beyond five seasons, even though the season 5 finales felt like they could have been natural endings. Needless to say, there were mixed results. Even if The Mandalorian ends up lasting only four seasons, that could be enough time to tell the story that needs to be told. The animated series Star Wars Rebels managed to tell a complete story over the course of four seasons. It might be wise to follow this example, especially seeing how The Clone Wars was planned to have eight seasons at one point but got canceled before eventually finishing with season 7 on Disney+ this year. It is better to be safe than sorry, so four seasons of The Mandalorian could very well be all that we need.

For now, we just need to get through season 2 before we see what comes beyond that point. The Mandalorian season 2 premieres October 30 on Disney+ and will be airing weekly. Many fans are excited for the series to return so that they may see what happens next.
