WATCH: CG Short For 'Star Wars: Squadrons' Revealed

The upcoming video game Star Wars: Squadrons is very close to hitting the shelves. October 2 is not too far away of a date to fly in that galaxy far, far away. Fans have already been hyped from what they have seen of the marketing, what with the gameplay and the stunning visuals. Of course, the marketing machine does not stop, and in this case, that seems to be a good thing.

On Monday, Electronic Arts released a CG short set within the world of Star Wars: Squadrons. This short is titled “Hunted.” The description tells us, “The New Republic fleet strikes the Imperial dockyard at Var-Shaa. Clocking in at almost seven minutes, this short actually has a lot going for it. You can click on the video below to experience it for yourself:

This short is quite a thrilling ride. Right away, one cannot help but be impressed with the cinematic feel of this short. Some have compared it to the type of content that was released for the marketing of The Old Republic MMO RPG. Set after the Battle of Endor that resulted in Emperor Palpatine's defeat, we get this intense battle in which the Empire is losing. A TIE pilot captain feels terrible about having to retreat again. When he does not make it aboard the Star Destroyer on time, he becomes the hunted when an X-wing gets on his tail.

These pilots do not feel like static characters that you might find in the background of a video game; they feel very much alive. There is an intensity and a sense of hatred that they have for one another, which is understandable given how devoted they appear to be for their opposing causes. They fling insults at each other that feel very believable. The Empire is evil, but this is a refreshing reminder that there are actual people within the Empire. This sometimes feels glossed over within the films. EA’s campaign mode for their Battlefront II game seemed like it would explore more of the Imperial perspective without throwing in the cliché aspect of leaving the Empire and joining the Rebellion, but the marketing for that game was a bait and switch. Perhaps Squadrons will not be as predictable, but this is simply a vibe that I get from watching this short. It may not necessarily reflect what will happen in the game.

Regardless, one cannot help but appreciate the work and the detail that went into making this CG short. When you think about it, this short did not need to be made. Many gamers were already convinced that they needed to buy Star Wars: Squadrons. This felt like more of a bonus. It shows that the game is being taken seriously, and that there are more facets to it than just the game itself. And that is really the beauty of the Star Wars universe. Certain stories can have different sides of them told across different media, which can improve one’s enjoyment of the stories. I was already excited to see what Squadrons may add to the overall Star Wars lore, but this short makes me feel even more excited for it. “Hunted” is truly a triumph, and I would not be surprised if we got more CG shorts like this one in the lead-up to the game’s release date. If the quality remains as consistently good as it was for “Hunted,” I say that EA should bring it on.

Star Wars: Squadrons will be released on October 2 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and X-Box One. When this game comes out, it is sure to have a strong presence in the overall Star Wars conversation.
