As Star Wars fans eagerly wait for the season 2 premiere of The Mandalorian this Friday, the internet has become ripe with news, leaks, and rumors about what is to come, this coming season. When thinking of The Mandalorian, it is likely that Solo: A Star Wars Story is not one of the first things that come to mind. Attempting to satisfy die-hard Star Wars Fans is certainly no simple task. Even though the legendary director, Ron Howard, put forth a remarkable effort with Solo: A Star Wars Story, the film failed to reach light speed at the box office. Solo: A Star Wars Story cost nearly $400 million to produce and market, and despite its spirited performances and rough-and-tumble humor, the film only yielded $150 million in its opening weekend in May 2018.

Anyone who saw Solo: A Star Wars Story, would likely agree that Donald Glover’s dazzling portrayal of the young Lando Calsissian was one of the greatest takeaways of this stand-alone prequel. Though the interest in a Solo prequel sequel seems minimal, there is certainly plenty of buzz surrounding the idea of a Lando spinoff series for Disney+, starring Glover. In February 2020, Variety reported that then-Disney CEO Bob Iger stated the company will be exploring “the possibility of infusing [The Mandalorian] with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.” As The Rise of Skywalker marked the completion of the Skywalker saga in 2019, Iger told investors that the company plans to “take a bit of a hiatus in terms of theatrical releases” and “The priority in the next few years is television.” Though a series centered around Obi-Wan Kenobi has yet to be filmed, a to-be-named series based on Rebel captain, Cassian Andor, starring Diego Luna, is in the works and set to be filmed soon, from what we have heard. Despite the rumors, Disney has yet to confirm whether or not fans can look forward to a Lando spinoff series.

Between establishing a successful music career under the moniker Childish Gambino, and starring as Earnest “Earn” Marks on FX’s hit comedy-drama series, Atlanta (season 3 is set to premier in January 2021), the multi-hyphenate Glover does not struggle to keep himself busy. As much as Star Wars fans would love to see Glover reprise his role as Lando Calrissian in a Lando spinoff series, they might have to take a number and wait their turn. Since it came to Netflix, fans of the sitcom Community are also hoping to see the two-time Emmy winner reprise his role as Troy Barnes in a reunion movie with his fellow Greendale classmates. Glover and his partner, Michelle White, have three young children, and with all of these commitments, is there enough Donald Glover to go around? Whether a Lando spinoff series could happen at all, would be entirely dependent on Glover’s availability.

In December, 2019, Business Insider reported that Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian and director of The Lion King, told The Hollywood Reporter that it was Donald Glover (voice of Simba) who came up with the suggestion to keep The Child, affectionally referred to as "Baby Yoda", a secret until The Mandalorian debuted in November.

"We were talking about music and pop culture, and he [Glover] was saying that what people really like now is to be surprised, because it doesn't happen that much. When Beyoncé did an album, she would just put it online and everybody would react to it. Just putting it out there spurred a conversation that would become more viral and bring more genuine attention than any marketing."

Just as the first season of The Mandalorian was cloaked in secrecy, it is no surprise that the second season has been kept under tight wraps as well. The season 2 rumors do not quite seem to correlate with the season 2 trailers, so fans cannot help but wonder where the cast members that have been speculatively confirmed (Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan, and Temuera Morrison as a Jango Fett clone) fit in, and if there are any top secret surprise guest stars in store. Given his contribution in keeping The Child a secret, Glover seems to enjoy surprising people. Could this be a potential hint from the creators of The Mandalorian and Glover, that fans might get to see Lando in season 2? We will just have to wait and see! The highly-anticipated second season of The Mandalorian premiering October 30 on Disney+ is bound to be spectacular, and we cannot wait!
