James Gunn Says That Margot Robbie is Likely the "Best Actor" He's Ever Worked With

Fans are eagerly awaiting director James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, which is due out next year. The 2021 film is a bit unusual in that it is a sequel and reboot rolled into one. Based on the snippet fans got to see during DC FanDome, it is going to be truly epic.

The 2016 Suicide Squad movie had decent box office returns.  However, the film was in the headlines even before its release. There was constant behind-the-scenes drama as the studio frequently interfered with director David Ayer's plans. Consequently, despite those positive box office results, the movie was panned by fans and critics alike.

Gunn's work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as writer and director was well received. He was brought in to right the Squad's ship with the soft reboot sequel for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). He ensured fans that this movie is entirely his vision. He also went on to state that the studio also approves of his take on the film.

Indeed, Gunn has found a new home with DC. Gunn revealed that the part of Bloodsport in the film was written specifically for Idris Elba. Peacemaker, as portrayed by John Cena, will be getting his own series. The show will be a prequel on HBO Max.

The director's attention to how the comic book characters are brought to life on the big screen is evident. Fans from around the globe have been sending him their fan art of Harley Quinn. Gunn graciously shared a few on his Instagram account. He continues to thank fans for their artistic contributions and support.

Certain DC fans are not too thrilled about the continued inclusion of Harley Quinn in this retelling of The Suicide Squad. Gunn defends the decision of her inclusion. He goes one step further and says, "She's probably my favorite DC character, and Margot Robbie is probably the best actor I've ever worked with, bar none."

Australian actress Margot Robbie's professionalism and dedication to her craft are well known. This is evident in the range of characters she has portrayed. She spends quite a bit of time and effort preparing for her roles. During an actor's roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, she stated that she watched every piece of footage available on Tonya Harding for the movie I, TonyaFor Bombshell, she went so far as to create a fake Twitter account to follow conservative females and watched hours of videos on Katherine Harris to lay the foundation for her composite character.

Gunn's comment shows how much he and the cast have really come together as a tightknit crew. This is also evident with Bloodsport. Gunn has never gone out of his way to write a specific part for an actor. Then again, who wouldn't want to work with Idris Elba? Gunn is also taking his love of this DC cast to the small screen by being involved with Cena's Peacemaker spinoff.

The cast and crew also feel the same way about him. Joel Kinnaman, who portrayed Rich Flagg in both Suicide Squad movies, spoke recently with The Hollywood Reporter about its latest version. About Gunn, he said the following:

"James just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters. For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it's like heavily R-rated. It was a real learning experience for me, too, because I'd never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this s***. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a f***ing monster. Honestly, even though I'm in it, I can't wait to see it as a fan."

Unless there are any further delays due to the current pandemic or whatever future crises the world may bring, The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6, 2021.
