Boba Fett Shows Up In 'The Mandalorian' Premiere

Season 2 of The Mandalorian started off exceptionally strong. Fans were extremely eager for this season, especially after exclusive interviews with Pedro Pascal (the Mandalorian), and others. Not only would this season bring more of 'Baby Yoda," but it also boasted many more surprises. Including some new characters…and some old.

There were reports that a certain character would make his way into the storyline of The Mandalorian. And of course, with a show about a Mandalorian, it would make sense that Boba Fett would eventually show up…right? Right. The thing is, fans generally did not expect it to happen so quickly.

"Chapter 9: The Marshal" has a long list of different Easter eggs and references throughout the episode. It is an extremely strong opening to a season, and Pedro Pascal’s earlier comments in his interview with Good Morning America about how this season blew him away, were true for the fans as well. What we have seen so far has been one wild ride.

In “Chapter 9,” Mando is searching for more Mandalorians. The ones from the group he grew up with are gone, as we learned in the previous season. He needs other Mandalorians to help him in bringing The Child back to his own kind. He hears about a Mandalorian rumored to be on the planet Tatooine.

Automatically, fans hear the words “Tatooine” and “Mandalorian” together and think, "Boba Fett." That was where we last saw him in Return of the Jedi. Suddenly, the show has the fans’ attention. When Mando arrives, he ends up meeting Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), who is the Marshal for Mos Pelgo, a small town that has a sort of Old West ghost town feel to it. When Cobb Vanth walks into the bar that Mando is at, fans may recognize his armor at once. It looks suspiciously like Boba Fett’s armor, a bit beat up, but still unmistakably his. Vanth reveals that he traded with a group of Jawas for it. We have not learned so far how they got ahold of it, but that may be coming in a future episode.

Nothing else is seen or mentioned for the rest of the episode relating to Boba Fett, unless you count the mention of the Krayt dragon (the terror that is threatening the town of Mos Pelgo and the local tribe of Sand People) and how he lives in an old Sarlacc pit, and most likely ate the Sarlacc to live there. The last time we saw Boba Fett in was when he fell into a Sarlacc’s mouth. Could it be the same one?

And then, we get a shot that the fans have been waiting for. In the final scene, for less than a minute, we get a look at who can only be assumed to be Boba Fett watching as Mando travels back to his ship carrying the Boba Fett armor that Vanth gave him. The actor is Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones. Since Boba Fett was a clone of Jango, it would make sense that when Boba Fett grew up, he would look exactly like Jango. And since Jango Fett was killed by Mace Windu in Attack of the Clones, it is obviously Boba Fett we see in this shot.

It was reported in May of 2020 that Boba Fett would appear in season 2 of The Mandalorian with Temuera Morrison taking on the role. None of us expected his introduction in the show to be this soon, though.

Now, hopefully, this is not the last that we see of Boba Fett. Mando still needs to find someone to help him bring The Child to his people, so perhaps he will come back to Tatooine. Or perhaps Boba Fett will go to him. Either way, there is a multitude of questions that still remain. How did Boba Fett lose his armor? How did he get out of the Sarlacc? And what has he been doing on Tatooine all this time?

The Mandalorian streams Fridays on Disney+, so be sure to keep watching to, with any luck, see some answers to these questions!
