Timelines Cross In The Forcetastic LEGO Holiday Special Trailer

The Star Wars Holiday Special is bad. Even if you are of the belief that there is no "objective good" or "objective bad," it is a very common sentiment that the original special from November 17, 1978. So when it was announced that Disney+ would be releasing The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, some fans on the internet acted like the sky was falling because the original holiday special left a sour taste in their mouths. However, the announcement made it clear that it was not a remake of that special, but rather a new holiday special that begins post-The Rise of Skywalker and sends Rey across the Star Wars timeline. Given that this will be in the form of Lego, this sounds like a fun adventure. It is not live-action, so it can get super ridiculous in a fun way.

Judging from the trailer that was released on Thursday morning, it looks like this special will deliver on the promise that it will be a fun time for the viewers. The special is said to be 45 minutes in length, and it will follow Rey, Rose, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, and their droids as they celebrate the Wookiee holiday Life Day. While trying to learn more about the Force, Rey finds herself on a time traveling adventure during which she will meet various familiar characters. We already knew that we would be seeing Lego versions of characters as we see them in each of the nine Skywalker saga films, but the trailer reveals a nice surprise appearance of characters from The Mandalorian: Din Djarin and The Child! Given the popularity of the Disney+ TV series and that this new special will be dropping in the middle of its second season, it only makes sense that these characters would show up somewhere in the special. Just look at how cute The Child is in Lego form!

As far as actors from the films go, this special will see the return of Kelly Marie Tran, Billy Dee Williams, and Anthony Daniels as Rose Tico, Lando Calrissian and C-3PO, respectively. Plus, we will even have veteran voice actors from The Clone Wars: Matt Lanter (Anakin Skywalker), Tom Kane (Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Dee Bradley Baker (clone troopers). With characters from different eras and all of these returning stars, it sounds like the special will feel like a celebration of Star Wars as a whole, which is fitting given that we did not get to have Star Wars Celebration this year. (It got pushed back to 2022, though there was a virtual fan convention in its stead called ForceFest, as well as some virtual ReedPop related panels back in May.)

You can check out the trailer for the special below, which should give you a good idea of what you can expect:

If this trailer somehow makes you angry...well, I don't know what to tell you. It's Lego, so lighten up. Star Wars fans can sometimes get in a bad mood when bits of new content do not live up to what they want. Some criticisms are fair, and others can be more time consuming than they need to be. This is Lego, so viewers should be able to sit back, not overthink, and just enjoy the special.

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is set to come out on Disney+ Tuesday, November 17, the 42nd anniversary of the original special. To celebrate the holiday of the Wookiees, get out your milk and cookies (or another suitable alternative)!
