We Will Probably See A Boba Fett Show Before We See 'Mandalorian' Season 3

The Mandalorian season 2 may have only recently premiered, but it's come with its own new wave of rumors. The most recent one was centered around its cameo of an original trilogy favorite, Boba Fett (Temura Morrison). The Mandalorian is no stranger to references to the larger Star Wars universe for fans to find, but this has been the most blatant one to date.

Boba Fett has had his share of rumors dating back before Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm. As with all popular characters, there's long been speculation about him getting a dedicated story for the screen. Legends fans will remember that he had a number of stories written about him to fill in his adventures and answer. We got answers to questions about how he went from a child to the bounty hunter we knew and what his fate ultimately was following Return of the Jedi. Now he's the center of a rumor of a series of his own.

Deadline has already reported that The Mandalorian season 3 could start filming as soon as this month. However, they also talk about how a possible "Mandalorian related project... possibly a Boba Fett themed miniseries, would film first, starting next week, with The Mandalorian season 3 following after a month long break." It doesn't mention when in the timeline it would take place, what kind of shape it would take, or whether it would repurpose any stories from Legends. But if the rumors can be believed, we will not be waiting too long to see what it would entitle.

Supposedly, following the lukewarm reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney has been moving away from the side stories it had planned. However, with the continued success of The Mandalorian, it seems that they are simply moving to shift them from full films to series on Disney+. Alongside the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and the side story centering around Diego Luna's Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it would be the third TV spin-off of a main film to appear on Disney+ as a series. It's believed that, with The Mandalorian being more open-ended and likely to last for a long while, these other series could be used to fill in the gaps between seasons.

While all news in the report should be taken with a grain of salt, if the route of using such a series to fill in the gaps between The Mandalorian is to be believed, we could be seeing this series within the next year. The method of making series on their own streaming platform is definitely a less risky avenue than making a full length feature film of it. With no worries about the box office or marketing budgets, it would mean less stress to make back the budgets. Based on the success on Mandalorian-related stories, it would likely strike close to The Mandalorian and allow them to utilize the same fan base.

The beginning of filming on this story being so soon would definitely buy them more time for the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Cassian Andor shows, since those, aside from being already confirmed, have hype surrounding them, and extra time to develop them would likely result in a stronger product. With reports of the Kenobi show being delayed, it makes sense that they would look for something they could use to fill the time for fans until that particular show can begin production. But it is important to note no specific release date was ever confirmed for Kenobi.

While there's no officially announced release date or even beginning date for the production for any of the aforementioned shows in the works, it's safe to say that if the Boba Fett series is in fact happening, it's most likely to be the first that we will get our hands on after the long wait.
