Why You Should Care About Marvel's ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Game

The Guardians of the Galaxy spring into action in promotional art for the video game

When we think of Marvel what do we think of? Movies, comics, TV shows and collectibles are the most popular, but what about video games? Marvels Avengers was a game that was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. It didn’t do well. Fans were left disappointed, so there was caution when it came to the announcement of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. That caution went away once the game was released. It was a fresh, and exciting story of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and one that was fun to play. If you haven’t picked up the game yet, hopefully this can convince you to finally play it.

In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy you assume the role of Peter Quill/Star Lord in a third person perspective. You and your team, that consists of Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and eventually Mantis, are trying to stop the Church of Universal Truth from taking over the galaxy. The game is somewhat open world, with many planets to explore once you’re on them, with the biggest one to explore being Knowhere. You also get to explore your ship, the Milano, and interact with your crew between missions. Cosmo the Dog makes an appearance and he proves he is the goodest boy in the galaxy. The game also has choices, and what you choose can affect the outcomes in different scenarios, especially towards the end of the game. This game is unfortunately not canon, but that doesn’t mean it's not worth playing for MCU fans. This does make it easier for non-MCU fans to play it, as there isn’t a bigger story involved.

The story is interesting and heartfelt without losing the classic humor of the Guardians. You get to know each of the characters, and how they came to be who they are. The combat is pretty fun, especially when you get to hype up your team and give them bonuses while fighting.

It’s a huge 80’s nostalgia fest, with an awesome 80's soundtrack. It also shows these characters in a different way than the MCU version. Peter and the others sometimes fight and sass each other, but at the end of the day, they're a team and they work together to accomplish their goal. Gamora and Peter Quill get their moments to shine in the game that would normally take a movie or two to build up.

The game can get repetitive, as you go to a new planet, fight some goons, travel, fight some more goons, travel, fight more goons and repeat until you get to the location you need to get to. However, the more you fight, the more you are able to unlock, so there is a purpose. Star Lord also unlocks different modes for his gun (ice, fire, lighting, and a grab ability) so you can change it up during each fight. All of these modes come in handy on the planet you’re on as well. The different voices take some getting used to, but they fit the characters perfectly. Each character has their own ability as well, which helps you advance to a secret area, or further in the game.

Star Lord, Groot, Gamora, Rocket Racoon

When I first watched the E3 announcement for this game, I’ll admit, I wasn’t excited, especially after hearing what happened with the Avengers game. The game looked interesting, but not interesting enough for me to play. Once the game came out, I saw positive reviews and read more about it. I picked it up half off, and was easily hooked. The story, like I’ve said many times is great.

As a huge MCU fan, especially of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, I can say this is a great game for all types of Guardians fans. You get to know the characters throughout the game, the scenery and backgrounds are fun. Exploring Knowhere is always a fun time, especially when you’re trying to decide if you want to spend your limited credits, or save them to pay off your debt. This game does have some replay ability, especially when it comes to the choices. I was satisfied with the ending, but wouldn’t be mad if they made a sequel. I hope more people will pick this game up, and give it the recognition it deserves.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is not canon in the MCU, but its still worth playing for MCU fans and non MCU fans alike. It’s not part of a bigger story, and tells a new, exciting story about this beloved team. It’s able to remain funny, but also heart felt, and as the game goes on, it keeps you wanting more. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a great game and I hope more people play it.
