Since its debut in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic [KOTOR] has been not only one of the most popular Star Wars video games but a popular media item in general from the saga. It has earned a generation of fans, and now, with an upcoming remake and recent release on the Nintendo Switch, the time is perfect for new players to jump in. Here are some helpful tips for your first playthrough.

Pick Your Class Beforehand

At its core, KOTOR is a tabletop RPG, so unless you have never thrown a handful of dice or frantically moved a mouse cursor across the screen, there are certain archetypes you can expect as you discover the mystery of Revan. Pick your class beforehand based on your preferred playstyles with one of the three Classes. Scoundrels have stealth and long-range attacks. Soldiers are the brute force guys. Or a Scout excels in both combat and skillsets. There are plenty of opportunities to expand your character throughout the game, too, so feel free to mix and match attributes and equipment later on.

Optimize Your Character

There is a whole debate on min-maxing an RPG character, but that is not the point here. These tips are just to provide an overview for a good first play-through. You start with 8 Skill Points to distribute among the skills, so optimize a given skill to fit your Class and play style. Are you going to rush in with a lightsaber or sit back and take potshots? You may want to put more of a focus on Strength or Persuade, then. And don’t forget the Feats that you can pick and develop.

Gameplay Tips

Save early, save often! The game does have an autosave, but I believe it is always better to be in control of saving. Besides, creating a save point before a major decision can let you go back and let it play out differently in the RPG.

When it comes to NPCs, make sure you talk to as many as possible, as they could give crucial hints on how to make progress in the story. Or find out more about the backstory of your allies.

Balance your party to ensure success in combat. Make sure you have both ranged and melee fighters to cover a wide variety of combat situations. You may want to include Bastila Shan who can switch between the two combat styles easily.

And most importantly, have fun saving the galaxy!
