Star Wars seems to be answering all the lingering mysteries surrounding the life of everyone’s favorite Jedi. In the months after the conclusion of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor, we’ve seen numerous novels and comics delve even deeper into Obi-Wan’s past and the beginnings of many of his most notable relationships. In the first issue of the Obi-Wan comic miniseries by Christopher Cantwell, we see Obi-Wan as a child trying to stop a fellow youngling from leaving the order and learn that he can’t save everyone. Then, in Star Wars: Brotherhood by Mike Chen, we see Obi-Wan’s first meeting with Asajj Ventress and how he acquired the nickname “Ben.” Now, most recently in Star Wars: Padawan by Kiersten White, we find out how Obi-Wan met arguably one of the most crucial figures in his life; Dexter Jettster.

First introduced in Attack of the Clones, Dex was seemingly little more than the Besalisk owner of his own restaurant, Dex’s Diner. With Dex’s help, Obi-Wan learned that the toxic dart that killed Zam Wesell originated from the planet Kamino, leading to him discovering the clone army. Aside from his knowledge of the criminal underworld, Dex has generally been depicted as a jolly, jovial chef who is almost as fond of Obi-Wan as he is of food. But in Star Wars: Padawan, we find out there is more to Obi-Wan and Dex’s friendship than we initially thought.

RELATED:

Padawan is set prior to The Phantom Menace and follows Obi-Wan as the Force guides him away from Coruscant to a mysterious planet known as Lenahra. On Lenahra, he runs into a group of seven orphans and finds an ancient power on the planet that the children use to survive. As Obi-Wan tries to convince them that using the power is killing the planet and them in turn, another group of people arrive on the planet. This is a crew of miners led by a smuggler named Loegrib. Among the members of his crew is none other than Dexter Jettster.

After becoming acquainted with Obi-Wan and the rest of the children on Lenahra, Dex explains that he was hired by Loegrib to help him mine the power on the planet. Initially, Loegrib is kind towards the children and even offers them a ride off the planet once they’re done. But soon enough, Loegrib’s true motivations become apparent as he makes it abundantly clear that he is willing to allow the children to die if it means getting his hands on the power. Upon realizing Leogrib’s intentions, Dex rallies the rest of Loegrib’s crew, who help Obi-Wan and the children stop Loegrib from taking Lenahra’s energy. As the planet collapses around them, the group reluctantly leaves Leogrib behind and barely escapes with their lives. Afterward, Dex agrees to help relocate the children to a safer home and returns to Coruscant alongside Obi-Wan. With their friendship solidified, Dex would remain on the planet and help Obi-Wan from time to time as he followed his love of food and opened his famous restaurant.

This backstory is not only endearing, but it also gives more weight to Obi-Wan and Dex’s friendship. Knowing that Dex helped Obi-Wan with one of his first Jedi missions explains why Obi-Wan would frequently go to Dex for assistance in Jedi-related matters. One could also interpret this as the Force guiding Obi-Wan towards the kinds of people he needed in his life throughout his time as a Jedi. Dex has been a fun side character in Star Wars since his introduction. But now, thanks to Padawan, he has become one of Obi-Wan’s emotional anchors as well as a friend he can go to whenever his Jedi duties overwhelm him. Hopefully, Obi-Wan will see his four-armed friend even more in future stories, depending on how big his pocketbook is.
