The Sith were not exactly known for friendship or teamwork. They strongly believed in their Rule of Two, only one master and one apprentice mindset, and generally looked down upon anyone else. You could say most were selfish and self-serving, but not all of them were like that. Darth Marr from the Old Republic era broke the standard Sith form, yet not many people know about him.

Not much is known about Darth Marr’s early life. Anyone who knew anything kept quiet. It is known that he trained to be a Sith warrior, and went faceless behind the mask and sharp, distinct armor. During the Great Galactic War between the Sith Empire and the Old Republic, Darth Marr was given a seat on the Dark Council and put in charge of defense. This role put him in charge of protecting their dark Empire from military attacks. After the losses of many council members, Marr became the sole leader by default.

The Sith lord was incredibly skilled and completely devoted to the Sith Empire.  Unlike those around him, Marr saw warfare as a means for the empire to evolve and survive. With his leadership position, he would do all possible to quell the internal squabbles so they could progress and properly fight their enemies. However, He was still a Sith through and through. Just because he sought unity did not mean he was not ruthless. While Marr did not lash out easily, he was formidable when triggered. The dark side also chipped away at his humanity, leaving the Sith lord stripped of most emotion outside of a desire to see the Sith Empire succeed.

One of the starkest differences from other Sith was that Marr had respect for the Jedi. He recognized them as powerful warriors and wielders of the Force of similar caliber as the Sith. There was one instance when Marr even willingly worked with the Republic to stop Revan from resurrecting the former Sith Emperor and prevent the Emperor from destroying all life in the galaxy.

Overall, Marr was one of the most powerful Sith of his time and was quite unique in his way of thinking. The dark wielder’s values, sense of duty, and devotion even gained him a temporary afterlife as a Force ghost, a feat no other Sith could achieve. Marr’s character set him apart from the rest and highlighted the importance of cooperation and balance for those around him.
