Ezra Bridger is a human from the planet Lothal in everyone’s favorite galaxy far, far away. He was featured in the television show Rebels and is slated to appear in the upcoming Disney+ show Ahsoka. He was voiced by Taylor Gray in Rebels, but will be played by Eman Esfandi in Ahsoka.

Ezra was orphaned at the age of seven when his parents were arrested for running a broadcast encouraging people to resist the Empire. Ezra had to learn to survive on his own, and did so by a combination of petty theft and scams. Although, as is established early in Rebels, he was never a bad person; he was just doing what he needed to in order to survive.

RELATED:

Eight years after his parents were arrested, Ezra met the crew of the Ghost: Chopper, Zeb, Sabine, Hera, and Kanan. This crew was a Rebel cell. At first, Ezra had no interest in the Rebellion; he worked with the crew as long as their interests aligned, but that was it. Eventually, however, he joined the crew, and they quickly became a family. Kanan and Hera seemed to be the parents, and Zeb, Sabine, and Ezra were like the kids.

Kanan was a padawan at the time of Order 66 who managed to escape the massacre. Ezra had been unknowingly using the Force for his entire life. Kanan quickly realized that Ezra was Force-sensitive, and took it upon himself to train him. Ezra was often an impatient student, and Kanan full of self-doubt as a master, but over time, they learned how to work well together. Through the Force, Ezra had a special connection to other living creatures, which he often used to communicate with and get help from different animals. After acquiring a kyber crystal, Ezra built his first lightsaber with a blaster built into the handle, and developed a unique fighting style incorporating both the blade and the blaster.

There was a time when Ezra flirted with the dark side of the Force. On a mission, he met Maul, who decided he would take Ezra on as an apprentice. Ezra was tempted by the power he sensed in the dark side, and, for a while, he became a much more aggressive, almost brutal fighter. Ultimately, he stayed in the light, partly due to his recognition of Maul for who he was, and partly due to the love for his adopted family.

By the end of Rebels, Ezra had become powerful with the Force. He became more of a leader in the Rebellion and organized a mission to rid Lothal of the Empire’s presence. At the final battle of Lothal, Ezra uses help from some purrgil, a space dwelling, lightspeed capable creature, to destroy most of the Imperial fleet and carry their leader, Thrawn, far away. Unfortunately, Ezra was also carried away by the purrgil. The series ends with Sabine and Ahsoka setting out to find Ezra after the events of Return of the Jedi.

It turns out that Ezra is a pivotal figure in the early days of the Rebellion. The street smarts he developed as an orphan, his Force abilities, and his devotion to his friends made him an effective fighter and leader. We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for Ezra Bridger during Ahsoka.
