Who Is Gungi And How Does He Tie-In To 'The Bad Batch'?

The Bad Batch season 2 trailer was first released during Star Wars Celebration Anaheim this year in May. In the trailer, we saw Clone Force 99 and Omega still dealing with the aftermath of Order 66. Omega has a helmet, and Hunter has a new scarf. However, not much was revealed in the trailer, but we saw some new and returning faces. It seems that Emporer Palpatine, Captain Rex, and Clone Commandos will all make an appearance again, and so will Crosshair, who is still at odds with his brothers. Commander Cody, a fan favorite from The Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, seems alive and well and will hopefully be a trusted ally for Clone Force 99. Another familiar face in the trailer is the Wookie padawan, Gungi. It appears that Gungi, thankfully, survived Order 66, but it is unknown how he will tie in with the Bad Batch.

Gungi was first seen in The Clone Wars Season 5, Episode 6, when he and the other younglings, accompanied by Ahsoka Tano and Jedi Master Yoda, went to Ilum to participate in a ritual called 'The Gathering,' an ancient Jedi ritual, where a youngling proves they are ready to become a Padawan. Each youngling had to overcome their fear or something within them to achieve their goal of receiving their crystal. Gungi's crystal was on an island, across a body of water in the cave. He listened to the advice to avoid going into the freezing water and instead meditated and waited for the water to freeze so he could cross.

Master Yoda later commended him on his patience. Later, Gungi and his fellow youngling's ship was attacked by the pirate Hondo. The younglings managed to escape, but Ahsoka was taken by Hondo and his pirates into space. The younglings finished their lightsabers and were able to confront Hondo and help Ahsoka escape the pirate's clutches. Gungi was later seen helping Hondo flee during a battle with General Grevious. He was also seen outside of the Jedi temple after the bombing occurred. He witnessed Anakin Skywalker and Barris Offee dueling outside the temple until she was apprehended. He achieved the rank of Padawan but then wasn't seen again.

It appears the Gungi did indeed survive Order 66, but the question is how? Of course, this won't be answered until the show is released, but we can always speculate. We know that not all Jedi and padawans were eliminated. As much as the Empire tried, they couldn't wipe out everyone. We see this with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, Kanan Jarrus, and even Cal Kestis, who all escaped the clutches of the Empire and survived Order 66. Gungi could've escaped alone, or maybe he had help from Ahsoka or even Obi-Wan. He could've also been helped by another unnamed Jedi or even a clone. There are many ways he could've survived Order 66, and hopefully, The Bad Batch season 2 will address that.

In the trailer, it appears Gungi is using his Jedi training and the lightsaber he made in The Clone Wars. Gungi could be a powerful ally for The Bad Batch and their fight against the Empire. While we were introduced to him as a youngling, it is unknown what he was doing after Order 66. And could he be more powerful than we know? The Bad Batch needs all the allies they can get, and Gungi would be a great one for them to have.

Gungi was a great character when he was introduced, and even though we didn't get much of this Wookie, I am so glad he appears to have survived Order 66 and could help Clone Force 99. I am excited to get more of this character we don't know about. The Bad Batch season 2 was set to release in September 2022, but Disney has taken it off their September schedule. Hopefully, they will add it again soon, so we can finally see Gungi and The Bad Batch again.
