Would Fennec Shand Make A Better Daimyo Than Boba Fett?

WARNING: Spoilers for Chapters 1- 3 of The Book of Boba Fett ahead. We’ll try to avoid major ones, but we can’t avoid everything. Proceed at your own risk.

The Book of Boba Fett follows the titular bounty hunter as he rises as a crime lord, or “Daimyo,” of Tatooine alongside fellow bounty hunter Fennec Shand. Though he seems to be giving his best, his trials and tribulations, particularly his survival of the Sarlacc pit, appear to have affected him deeply. He seems out of it, hesitant, out of his element, and even a bit unfulfilled. At least one person suggested that his takeover of Jabba’s palace seems more like something he did because he had no other ideas, not because he actually wanted to. In short, it does not seem like he has the guts for the job. This raises the question, is Fett fit to rule, or does he need to be replaced?

Fett might not be the best option for Daimyo here, but that does not mean there is no other option right next to him, one who is at least more ready for the life that comes with it. We are of course talking about Fennec Shand, which raises yet another question, just how ready would she be?

Shand has already been shown to be more willing to engage in this kind of business and seems to want to reap the benefits of the position far more than Boba Fett. She is more eager in her actions, more ready, and less hesitant than Boba is. She certainly seems just a bit deadlier than him. That is not the only thing to be taken into consideration during these discussions, but we should probably cover all our marks in order to make sure that this is one comprehensive and complete conversation. After all, no one likes a half-baked theory, and if we want to be taken seriously, we need to think these things through.

This leads to yet another question. If Shand is better for the job, why doesn’t she take it herself? This question can be countered with another: who says Shand even wants the job or wants to betray Boba Fett? Remember, this is the man who saved her life, and she is certain to repay the favor however she can. At this point, taking the job almost certainly means betraying Fett, and Shand has no desire nor drive to do that. For now, she is simply content with being Fett’s number two and is more than willing to help him out however she can.

On the contrary, that is not to say that Boba Fett will keep the position throughout the series, as there is nothing preventing him from simply quitting and giving the position to Fennec Shand in the future. We will simply have to see where that plot thread goes in The Book of Boba Fett, now airing on Disney+ on Wednesdays. You can also catch up on other Star Wars media in the meantime, and maybe find something else you enjoy while browsing through the website. This is an important year for the brand, and we hope you enjoy at least some of it.

Before we leave once again, we ask you one last question, who do you think should be Daimyo? It could be Boba, it could be Fennec, or it could even be someone else. We just want to see if you have an answer to the question, and add to the debates and discussions. Well, with that, that is all the time we have for this article. This has been Culture Slate, and may the Force be with you, always.
