Why You Need Permission To Kill A Hutt Explained

The Book of Boba Fett already has Star Wars fans riveted to their screens. While the first three episodes, so far, are not showing too much action, we do certainly get a sense of Boba Fett’s past since crawling out of the Sarlacc pit. The questions that have plagued fans since we found out that Boba Fett had survived the Sarlacc are being answered. In addition, some intriguing new politics are coming into play. Boba Fett, as a bounty hunter, is no stranger to politics. He knows, generally, what is acceptable and what is not in civilized (and uncivilized) company. And in Chapter 2 of The Book of Boba Fett, we learn that Boba Fett needs permission to a kill a Hutt if that is what he wants to do, despite being a formidable bounty hunter.

As well as being full of Boba Fett’s backstory and feelings of the past, the present shows some rather intriguing politics and questions that arise when Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) try to hang on to the position at the top of the crime syndicate that they have won, and deal with the people of Tatooine, including the mysterious Mayor Mok Shaiz (who is voiced by executive producer Robert Rodriguez). We also meet the Twins, who are part of the Hutt Clan. This shows that despite the death of Jabba, the Hutts are not all gone from power. Adding to the mix, we have new characters like Black Krrsantan and the gang of cyborgs that end up working for Boba Fett.

In Chapter 2, it seemed like the Twins would be playing the role of antagonist in The Book of Boba Fett. However, by the end of Chapter 3, it seems like it might not be as cut and dry as that. Despite how large of a role they might be, Fennec Shand is still in the right when she tells Boba that it would not be easy for him to deal with the Twins as you cannot just simply kill a Hutt.

The Hutts are one of the biggest criminal enterprises in the galaxy. The Twins themselves are not connected to Jabba at all except through being Hutts. It is said that they are cousins, although it is unclear how close of a relation this makes them in reality. In the canon, there have been multiple Hutts mentioned and chronicled in Jabba’s family tree and there has been no mention of the Twins before this. Although, that does not necessarily mean much since Star Wars is always introducing new players that are somehow connected to others. You didn’t really expect them to make a show based on Tatooine and the criminal underworld and not bring in a Hutt, did you? The Hutts are one of the five syndicates that control the criminal underworld along with the Pyke Syndicate, Black Sun, and Crimson Dawn.

The Hutt Clan is technically made up of several clans or kajidics, which refer to both gangs and families. The whole of the clan is overseen by the Grand Hutt Council making up of five of the most powerful kajidics. If you want to compare them to a syndicate in the real world, they would probably be most closely compared to the Chinese Tongs and La Cosa Nostra. So far, in Star Wars canon we have seen two kajidics: the Desilijic Tiure Clan (overseen by Jabba the Hutt until his death in Return of the Jedi), and the Besadii Family (led by Arok, who is seen among the leaders of the Hutt Council during the Clone Wars). In The Book of Boba Fett, the Brother has a clan tattoo on his chin to show how powerful the Hutt Clan is and how united the families are. Jabba had one on his arm as well.

The Twins arrive on Tatooine in Chapter 2 of The Book of Boba Fett to try to stake their claim on the area following Bib Fortuna’s death. Bib Fortuna had taken over Jabba’s empire (for safeguarding). The Twins try to intimidate Boba Fett, but the former bounty hunter is not interested and tells them that they would have to kill him to get the throne. The Brother says that “bloodshed is bad for business.” Boba and Fennec realize, when the Twins leave, that they may have an enemy on their hands. Fennec then tells Boba “You need permission if you want to kill them.” This is in reference to the Hutt Clan’s well-established power in the criminal underworld. They are so connected in the criminal underworld across the galaxy that attacking one would be like attacking all of them. If Boba Fett were to kill the Twins, he would be signing his own death sentence as he would have to face the whole clan. One Reddit user likened this to the rules in the mafia:

“I assume it works the same way as the mafia - you have to get approval to kill a made guy, a member of the organization so to speak, or else you will be killed in retaliation. If you’ve ever seen Goodfellas or The Sopranos, that’s something that’s explained in both.”

Basically, the Twins would not be an easy threat to remove, unlike some of the other crime syndicates. Even though they left the planet in Episode 3 with the revelation that they were, in fact, stepping down from their claim over the area, they may still have a part to play. Boba Fett may have to go deeper into the criminal underworld to uncover the truth and keep a hold on his territory, which, with the way the series is heading, seems more and more likely.
