‘Doctor Strange 2’ Breaks New Box Office Records

The latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is already the movie with the highest opening of the year so far. After making Marvel Studios $90 million in one day, domestically, it is projected to secure a total of $200 million during its first weekend. That is $25million more than was previously predicted. This means the Doctor Strange sequel has the seventh-highest opening in history.

This is a significant increase in what the original outing for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme made. The first Doctor Strange had the ninth-lowest opening of the whole MCU. What changed? Is it because of Steven Strange’s appearances in Avengers crossover events Infinity War and Endgame and in Thor: Ragnarock and Spider-Man’s latest No Way Home? The character has now become one of the most popular, likely filling the void left by Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.

How The Figures Stack Up

Number one on the list of the highest-grossing movies of 2022 was The Batman. However, that only made $135 million in March. That means if Doctor Strange’s latest adventure only comes in at the lower end of projections at $160 million, it would still come up on top. It also means that it has enjoyed the second-best opening of any film since the pandemic began. Spider-Man: No Way Home still holds that record.

Other entries to the highest opening day in MCU box office history include Avengers: Age of UltronAvengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. This just shows the power of crossover events and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme.

The Illuminati And The Professor X-Factor

Much like Spider-Man: No Way Home, another key reason to the film’s success is thanks to the multiverse. The film introduces Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, the figurehead of the X-Men, to the MCU. This makes sense as the latest Spider-Man film also benefitted from the power of the crossover.

It remains to be seen whether the second Doctor Strange film will stay at the top of the list. The next MCU film to be released this year is Thor: Love and Thunder, which is yet another crossover event for the God of Thunder and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The return of Jane Foster in the role of Mighty Thor will also likely help its case.

The current hype machine meant that Steven Strange dispatched soundly of The Batman, which is something that undoubtedly irked DC and Warner Brothers. Will the Sorcerer Supreme’s nightmarish trip to other dimensions be victorious? We will need to wait until the weekend of July 8th to see when Thor: Love and Thunder finally screens.

Why You Should See Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness?

Following in the footsteps of Spider-Man: No Way HomeDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shows that the multiversal problem has not been resolved. The multiverse is still collapsing, and he will have to call in a favor from Scarlet Witch, MCU newcomer America Chavez, and the long-suffering Wong. With Sam Raimi in charge, the trip into the multiverse will bring more than just some Spider-Man villains and different versions of the web crawler.

With Professor X and the other members of the Illuminati, along with the giant squid-like demon called Gargantos, there is a lot is going on in the movie. While its reviews so far are mixed, most suggest that the Doctor Strange sequel delivers more than it does not.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently showing in theaters and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elisabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Patrick Stewart.
