Another explainer-type video has been released for Sonic Frontiers. This time, the video focuses on the combat, abilities, and skill tree featured in the open-zone gameplay. First, the combat and skill tree are discussed. Sonic will start with his basic moveset of the homing attack, drop dash, and stomp. These moves are effective on normal enemies, the player will need to unlock new skills to take on the stronger enemies found on the Starfall Islands. These skills can be unlocked by collecting enough skill pieces, which can be found around the area and dropped by fallen enemies. It will also be important to collect the red seeds of power and blue seeds of defense to withstand attacks by stronger enemies. The Adventurer’s pack that is received by pre-ordering the game comes with these items as a bonus.

Next, the combos and abilities are covered. Combos are emphasized as a way to get the upper hand when fighting stronger enemies. Sonic also has a new skill called the Phantom Rush, which boosts attacks until the combo meter is depleted. Another new move is the Sonic Boom, which is “a long-range, high-speed kick that unleashes shockwaves at the enemy.” Lastly, Sonic has another new move called Wild Rush, which allows him to zig-zag and smash into enemies while avoiding fire. Combat appears to be a huge focus of this game.

The video then discusses the Cyloop. By looping around enemies with higher defenses, this ability can break through their shields for a certain amount of time, allowing Sonic to attack them head-on. Cyloops appear to also be useful for collecting rings as well.

Lastly, the video goes over encounters with the Guardian enemies and the parry ability. Guardian encounters will take plenty of strategy and reading of the opponent’s moves, so the player is encouraged to experiment with combos and other abilities while fighting them. The parry ability appears to be a way for Sonic to blow back the enemy’s attacks when prompted.

It is clear that this game is shaping up to be vastly different from previous entries and will give players plenty to do when it speeds onto all major platforms on November 8th.
