Cheadle’s tenure with Disney and Marvel is far from over.

Word has come out today that the upcoming series Armor Wars will begin filming this fall. The information was spotted during a University of Pennsylvania event that took place back on April 23 where producer Jenna Berger was one of the presenters. Her bio for the event indicated that the show will go into production this fall.

The Direct speculates that with a typical filming schedule of about four months and the long editing and post-filming process that follows, the show will likely debut in Winter 2023 or early 2024.

Armor Wars will be based on the comic series that explores Tony Stark’s attempt to figure out who stole his tech, and his fight to get it back. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), however, it is unlikely that Tony Stark will be in the series, having died to save the universe from the second Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Unless he makes an appearance via a flashback. It is not completely outside the realm of possibility, though, as the actor had cryptically said “Never say never” back in 2021. It is also a well-known penchant of Disney to keep a tight lip on things, and then drop fan service cameos into their series, like the return of Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid in the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale.

Not much is known at the moment about Armor Wars other than it will likely pursue a similar plot as the comics, except it will feature Don Cheadle returning as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, who has donned the War Machine armor since Iron Man 2. We have seen Peter Parker come to grips with the gravity of Tony dying, but we have not seen much from Tony’s best friend. The last time Rhodes appeared in the MCU was for the Disney+ show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. So supposedly Armor Wars will follow Rhodes as he comes to terms with Tony’s death as he goes on a journey to deal with the evidence that Tony’s technology may be in the wrong hands.

Nick Fury played a role in the Marvel comic series, which ran from December 1986 to June 1987. It is also known that Secret Invasion is currently in development as well where Nick Fury will be heavily featured given his role in Captain Marvel and his interaction with the Skrulls. Could we also see the return of Nick Fury during Armor Wars? What about Hawkeye? It will certainly be interesting.

The MCU is all about tie-ins, and that extends into their television shows as well. Hawkeye had tied into Black Widow with Florence Pugh making an appearance as Natasha’s sister. It is entirely possible that Hawkeye and his new protege Kate Bishop could make appearances.

Time will tell.
