The Mountain That Cried In ‘Star Wars’
The Star Wars galaxy has a lot of odds and ends to it, filled to the brim with all sorts of wonderful and magical elements. However, some of those elements are a bit stranger than others. When the Expanded Universe was conceived, it expanded the Star Wars galaxy in a way that was both odd and weird, but also fantastical and enlightening. The old Expanded Universe was made up of many eras too. There was the Bantam era of the '90s to the Del-Ray era of the mid to late 2000s. In the early years of the EU, the comic book license belonged to Marvel Comics.
Throughout the '70s and '80s, the Marvel comics thought there was a whole hodgepodge of all sorts of weird and bizarre things that the Star Wars universe had created over time: from Vader’s secret apprentices to the one time a Kenobi impersonator tried to trick Luke Skywalker. However, one of the more bizarre things in the Star Wars universe was the Mountain of Sorrow, also known as just Mount Sorrow.

Mount Sorrow is a mountain on the forest moon of Endor. It was one of the many more interesting and fantastical elements of the planet that were added during the time of the Expanded Universe. According to Ewok legend, the tip of the mountain was said to be sentient. Well, that legend was correct as this mountain could and did talk.
We would encounter Mount Sorrow in the Ewok comics, which was an old cartoon involving Wicket from Return of the Jedi and his Ewok friends. They came upon this magical mountain that had healing powers and would help weary travelers who lived up to its very hefty standards. Ewoks like Wicket and his friends tried to climb it only to get in trouble by the mountain and almost fall off.
Endor was an interesting planet in the old Expanded Universe, especially in the '80s. With the Ewoks comics introducing all the various aspects of Endor, the forest moon appeared to be a very fantastical and magical world indeed. It had actual full-on magic that was quite powerful, even beyond that of the Force. It was one of many things that the old Expanded Universe was allowed to get away with since back then things like an interconnected universe and canon were not as important to the main Star Wars brand. That meant there were a lot of fun experiments to be had.
Endor as a planet itself had always been an interesting world. The Ewok Adventure movies and the comic series expanded upon it after Return of the Jedi. There was not necessarily any standard, and they just went wild with it. That was how we ended up with a literal cartoonish talking mountain that cried and talked and we wouldn’t even think twice about it.
Throughout its history, the Star Wars Expanded Universe had taken a lot of interesting twists and turns. This was more true in its early years when the Star Wars franchise had not cemented itself within the wider pop culture world. It is always fascinating to see the wacky and bizarre things that the creative storytellers of the time had come up with. There was a lot of room for imagination, wonder, wackiness. While things have streamlined over the years, Mount Sorrow has become a place of interest for classic Star Wars fans. Perhaps one day it will return to the realm of canon.
