Charlie Cox Discusses His Daredevil Future Within The MCU
Back in 2015, Netflix released a live-action streaming series starring Charlie Cox and based on the Marvel character Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, the blind superhero with heightened abilities who defended the downtrodden of Hell’s Kitchen in NYC. Many fans raised a Spockian eyebrow to the series, as many only remembered the last foray of Daredevil in the form of Ben Affleck.
However, without the main studio restrictions, Netflix was able to bring a series with some dark moments, heavy action, and mature themes. It had a lot of fans and led to multiple spin-offs such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, The Defenders and the unfortunate Iron Fist. But with Disney launching their own streaming platform in 2019, Netflix was told to lay off making anymore. with the project coming to an end in 2018. As we enter the new era of Marvel series on Disney+, fans were hoping to see some reappearance of these characters but things were kept pretty quiet. Even the actors moved on to other projects and all was pretty much done.

Flash forward to December 2021 and the release of the Disney+ series, Hawkeye and look who is the main bad guy in the series, none other than Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin. Then, a couple weeks later in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker is receiving legal advice from none other than Matt Murdoch, reprised again by Charlie Cox, in a short, 2 minute scene. Fans began to buzz, with Disney bringing these actors and characters back into the fold, everyone is now wondering if there will be more appearances of the Netflix Marvel team. This week, it was announced by Netflix that ALL the Marvel series would be dropped from the platform as of March 1 because Disney retained the rights to the characters again. The possibilities are now endless with some established characters and fan favorites back in the family. But how do the actors feel? Well, Charlie Cox was recently interviewed and was asked just what all these appearances, from his own appearance in No Way Home, to D’Onofrio in Hawkeye, mean to him.
In the article he talks about receiving the call from Kevin Feige in 2020 asking him if he wanted to comeback as the character when Daredevil was going to be re-introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, he was excited to get back into it;
“I felt pretty comfortable being able to fit into that scene, (referring to his moment in 'No Way Home') I played the character almost every day for four years. I feel like his essence is deep within me now…I didn’t worry too much about it, but I was still pretty nervous on the day, which I haven’t been for a while.”
When asked what this small appearance could mean overall for both himself and the rest of the Netflix crew he says;
“Look, I don’t have any idea what anyone’s plans are at this stage, but I presume there’s more for us to do... I know a little bit — not a huge amount — but a little bit. I am imagining, I am hoping, that our worlds will collide again because the stuff we’ve done in the past was tremendous fun to do, and (D’Onofrio) is such an incredible actor. We have to start every conversation with, ‘What do you know?’ because you have to be careful. It’s really exciting.”
But whether the decision will be to bring him back to series work, or even the MCU, is an intriguing question for Kevin Feige and Disney. Phase 4 of the MCU seems to be in full swing with a full slate of movies being released this year. Clearly Disney has no apparent issue with crossing their platforms, having segments of the Disney+ universe cross into the movie universe as the trailer for Doctor Strange 2 seems to show. But when watching the new Disney+ series Marvel Studios Assembled: The Eternals, Feige seems to hint that, with Avengers: End Game, “…we’ve finally completed a 22-movie infinity sage.” So, while you might not see Daredevil fight alongside Thor or the Guardians of the Galaxy, perhaps we will see him show up as an ally to Spider-Man in a new series of movies? At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker appears to be living a life of solitude and reserved to working the streets alone. Perhaps he comes across Daredevil in defense of NYC in a new series of adventures. But can Daredevil carry his own movie? Personally, I think the time of Daredevil carrying his own movie has passed, but as a supporting character to a character like Spider-Man, absolutely!
