Even 'Kenobi' Actor Anticipated A Trailer For Disney+ Day

An unexpected surprise but not a very welcome one, the highly anticipated "Disney+ Day" did not have much in terms of new updates for Kenobi or any of its upcoming slate of Star Wars series or movies. While there was plenty of Marvel news and announcements to go around, highly anticipated shows set in a galaxy far, far, away (such as Andor, Bad Batch Season 2, and Kenobi) were not so fortunate. Personally, I can't help but be reminded of the debacle that was the release of the second trailer for the similarly anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

For those who don't recall, back in 2016, fans had heard rumors abound of a second trailer for the much hyped anthology film to be aired during Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. over the summer. However, this trailer just ended up being a sizzle reel for the film that had already been shown during that year's Rogue One panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe.

Now it seems we have a similar situation here. Prior to the awkward day of infrequent updates about the streaming service's upcoming content without any kind of schedule or livestream, rumors were running amok about a teaser for the long awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor and directed by Deborah Chow, one of the many directors of The Mandalorian. Chow first caught the attention of Star Wars fans when she helmed the third chapter of Season 1 of Mandalorian; The Sin. This episode was a solid combination of stormtrooper-blasting action while also striking an emotional cord with viewers, and displaying some visual storytelling on-par with George Lucas himself.

Yet like with Rogue One, it seems that a new trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi was not meant to be, as the teaser in question was actually the exact same sizzle reel for the series that was shown privately to Disney's investors back in December of 2020 during the company's many upcoming announcements for its ever-growing franchise. Without the anticipated trailer, still little is known about the plot of the highly anticipated streaming series.

But it seems that it wasn't just the fans expecting a teaser. O'Shea Jackson Jr., oldest son of well-known rapper Ice Cube, and one of the announced cast members of Obi-Wan Kenobi expressed his own confusion on Twitter at the lack of any actual trailer for the series. The tweet, which can be seen below, is short and sweet but certainly conveys the confusion and disappoint that many Star Wars fans felt with the lack of Star Wars related news on Disney+ Day.

Whether this is an indictment of fan expectation or Disney/Lucasfilm's overly conservative approach to marketing its films and series, I'm still not quite sure. But I believe if there's anything to take away from this, it's that nothing is certain when it comes to advertising. Even the most anticipated trailers can be taken down or heavily edited at the eleventh hour no matter how patiently fans have been waiting for them. Personally, I was satisfied with what we were shown for Obi-Wan Kenobi and I'm content with waiting until next year for a proper trailer. Though I am also aware of the importance of marketing and will continue to keep a close eye on how much every future Star Wars project is shared (or not shared) with its audience.
