The Next Installment Of 'The Last Of Us' Will Be A Multiplayer Game

Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us Part I

Fans of The Last of Us should be over the moon after yesterday's kickoff stream for Summer Game Fest. A remake of the first game has been announced, and the HBO show has finished filming this week. There is also another standalone game coming down the pipeline. It appears the next installment in The Last of Us series will be very different than previous games as this new release will be a multiplayer game.

The game will be set in San Francisco and will be larger than any of the single-player games that Naughty Dog has done. Co-president Neil Druckmann explained during Summer Game Fest that the idea originated as a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II, but the team managed to wind up with a single-player game by the end of its development. He also confirmed that the game will have a story all its own, as well as a new cast of characters to experience it with. He was also quoted as saying, "The way we're telling the story is very unique to this game."

While no release date was given during the presentation, we do know that we will have to wait until next year to find out more about the untitled game.
