'God Of War Ragnarok' Developers Tease Fans With A Story Update On Their Website

When players last left Kratos and Atreus, they were standing before the god of thunder, Thor, as he stood outside of their home wielding his mighty hammer. Atreus had learned the truth of his origins, Kratos had killed yet another god, and Odin had obviously taken notice. Fans have been ecstatic since the release of the sequel’s first trailer, and now Santa Monica Studios has released a story synopsis that should only have them more excited.

While the plot has remained under wraps, Sony updated the game’s page on Playstation with a full story synopsis that reads:

“Embark on a mythic journey for answers and allies as Kratos and Atreus prepare for Ragnarök.

From Santa Monica Studio comes the sequel to the critically acclaimed God of War (2018). Fimbulwinter is well underway. Kratos and Atreus must journey to each of the Nine Realms in search of answers as Asgardian forces prepare for a prophesied battle that will end the world. Along the way, they will explore stunning, mythical landscapes, and face fearsome enemies in the form of Norse gods and monsters. The threat of Ragnarök grows ever closer. Kratos and Atreus must choose between their own safety and the safety of the realms.”

In the prior game, players were able to explore six of the nine realms and were given just a small taste of the Norse Gods. This synopsis shows that the game will be even more expansive than the last, which already broke the mold in more ways than one by introducing new mechanics, introducing free roam, and the additions of side missions beyond the Challenge of the Gods modes in the original games. Further down the game’s official page reveals that more enemies and weapons will be returning and premiering with the statement:

“The Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos and Guardian Shield return alongside a host of new abilities for both Kratos and Atreus. Kratos’ deadly Spartan skills will be tested like never before as he battles gods and monsters across Nine Realms to protect his family. Journey through dangerous and stunning landscapes while facing a wide variety of enemy creatures, monsters and Norse gods as Kratos and Atreus search for answers.”

The reveal of Atreus’s true identity, Loki, was a jaw-dropping moment for players. While Kratos has faced gods and is a demi-god himself, he or the players never imagined that he would father a god. The prophecy revealed at the end of God of War (2018) only led to more questions than answers as the two’s new roles in this realm became clearer yet fogged deeper. Luckily this game looks to reveal all in this entry as the synopsis also states:

“Atreus seeks knowledge to help him understand the prophecy of “Loki” and establish his role in Ragnarök. Kratos must decide whether he will be chained by the fear of repeating his mistakes or break free of his past to be the father Atreus needs.”

IGN reported last year that this would be the final entry in the Norse saga, so expect an explosive story akin to that of God of War 3. Expect much bloodshed, heartbreak, and the phrase “boy” to be uttered repeatedly as Santa Monica wraps up yet another god-killing epic. Make sure not to miss out when God of War Ragnarok releases on November 9th, 2022 on both Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 consoles.
