Kevin Feige Gives Update On 'Loki' Season 2
When the announcement that Marvel was going to be continuing some of their biggest characters storylines through the medium of TV came, many fans were a little skeptical. Their previous projects sadly never reached anywhere near the hype achieved by their film series as they weren't as universally loved. However, by the time WandaVision ended, that all changed. WandaVision changed the game for Marvel, then The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came along and continued the trend.
However, it was their third series, Loki, which really drove it home. Everyone loved the show, and it set up the next big bad within the MCU. Like the two shows which preceded it, Loki was expected to be a one-and-done deal. But at the very end of the season finale, a message appeared confirming Loki would indeed return for a second season, and ended with quite the cliffhanger.

With everything coming up on the Marvel slate in the near future (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, etc.), it was obvious that it would be sometime before we actually saw a second season. However, according to Marvel Head Kevin Feige, the shows production is actually underway, and we could be seeing the show return quicker than expected. During a press day for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Feige took part in an interview with Collider and gave us an update on season 2. Check it out below:
"It is underway. We're developing it as we speak. The hope is that much of the same team will return. Kate is going on to bigger and better things, so the director search will begin shortly."
He also went on to state he was "not sure exactly where it falls between next year and the year after" with regards to the show filming. This just shows how popular Loki actually is and also means a lot of Phase 4 and/or 5's stories could be told via future seasons of the show.
We know WandaVision was designed to lead into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was designed to lead into Captain America 4, but Loki is completely unique. It does set up the Doctor Strange sequel, but can also set up multiple films or other shows.
It has been reported that Tom Hiddleston will appear as Loki within Doctor Strange 2, but the season finale has left a lot of unresolved storylines. Loki finds himself back in the TVA with Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), who doesn't remember him. Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) is left to come to terms with killing a Kang Variant. And Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is off on her own quest for free will after learning the truth about the TVA. Based on this, a second season is definitely warranted.
Having said that, the season 1 finale does play an integral part in the overall story. As mentioned above, it introduces our next big bad in the form of Kang the Conqueror or at least a variation of him, and many believed the end of the last episode to be the event which splits the multiverse. However, the recent No Way Home trailer seems to suggest it is Spider-Man and Doctor Strange who cause the rift, so it remains to be seen just how all these little individual events all fit together and could mean characters from the show will appear in films as well. We'll just need to wait and see how it all works out.
For now, though, season 1 of Loki is streaming now on Disney+.
