Rumor: ‘KOTOR’ Remake Will See Relatively Small Changes To Gameplay But Story Will Remain Untouched

Back in September of 2021, Star Wars gaming fans were delighted to hear that Aspyr Media are going to be releasing a remake of the BioWare/LucasArts classic game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PS5 and Windows PC, with release for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One at a later date . The initial announcement was made as part of the Sony PlayStation Showcase.

Aspyr Media have already done great work with the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic franchise as they have been responsible for porting the original game to Mac and mobile platforms as well as reviving other classic Windows games. They have also been responsible for the recent ports of Star Wars: Republic Commando, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars Episode I: Racer.

Up until now Aspyr Media have just been doing straight ports of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, with this new release things are going to be different with the game being more than just a straight port. The game would be “completely rebuilt from the ground up,” Aspyr Media said in a news release. Development of the remake is being led by “a newly created team composed of industry veterans at developer and publisher Aspyr, working in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.” They have been doing so by bringing in some former members of BioWare, the original creator of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Aspyr Media have been very tight lipped about the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic release but rumors are starting to come to light. It would appear that the plan is to keep the story relatively unchanged with some minor tweaks here and there. It will play in line with the original release in the same way the recent ports did. The one snippet of information that is gathering momentum is that they are looking at ways to improve the original combat system to make it a modern fighting experience. They are looking at the popular God of War and Nioh 2 for inspiration.

There is also talk that Aspyr Media are looking to revamp the soundtrack for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. As they are already looking to build the game from the ground up, presumably to make it run more efficiently on modern consoles and machines, it makes prefect sense that they would look to also reproduce the soundtrack using modern technologies to make it a full top quality release.

It remains to be seen just how much Aspyr Media’s plans change between now and the actual release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It sounds like a very ambitious project to remake, rather than port, such a classic game. The project appears to be in great hands from what we have heard about the crew involved (along with the quality work that Aspyr Media have already done with various Star Wars game ports). The remake appears to be in very safe hands from the look of things.

There is still a bit of a wait between now and its release so it gives me plenty of time to try and source myself a PS5 before that date! In the meantime, check out the various ports of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic while we wait for what we hope will be another classic Star Wars game.
