New Footage From ‘Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse’ Reveals Over 200 New Characters

Sony had a fairly large presence at CinemaCon on Monday night.  Currently taking place in Las Vegas, Sony revealed plans to release Venom 3, a sequel to the successful Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and another Spider-Man villain movie El Muerto played by Bad Bunny. Yeah we didn’t see that last one coming either. One thing most Marvel fans did know about were two sequels to the Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That movie was critically acclaimed, and loved by fans as well as casual moviegoers. This trifecta of praise has left hype for the sequels at an all time high. Sony did not disappoint with what they brought to CinemaCon.

Fans were happy to see anything at all for the Spider-Verse sequels. The first sequel was set to release this October, however it was just recently announced that the sequels would be delayed to June 2, 2023 and March 29, 2024 respectively. Originally titled Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 and Part 2, Sony revealed Monday the films would now release as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were on hand to present new footage, and were introduced by Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman.  Before doing so, Lord and Miller revealed some key details of the film.  It will take place in six universes, compared to the one universe of Into the Spider-Verse.  It will also involve 240 characters, compared to the first movies’ 40.

Now that the crowd was even more hyped, Lord and Miller released the never-before-seen footage which was the first 15 minutes of Across the Spider-Verse.  It opened on Earth-65 and focused on Gwen Stacey AKA Spider-Woman, voiced by Haliee Steinfeld, at her home. There she finds out that Adrian Toomes AKA The Vulture has been attacking the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan. Gwen swings into action and finds the Guggenheim in shambles. She begins to fend off the chaos around her, but is soon captured by the Vulture.

While in the Vulture's grasp, Gwen says, “This is the dumbest way to die.”  She then escapes and runs into Miguel O’Hara AKA Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Oscar Isaac. Miguel is not happy with Gwen. He exclaims that “she left a hole wide enough for guys like him [Vulture] to get shot into the wrong dimension.” After meeting a new Spider-Man, Gwen also meets another Spider-Woman.  The Jessica Drew version, voiced by Issa Rae, is five months pregnant.  She does not know the gender however, as her “corny” partner wishes it to be a surprise.

Back on the anchor reality Earth from the first film, Miles Morales still struggles with being on time. As Spider-Man he is fighting bad guys, but also running late for a college counseling session.  Miles’ parents, voiced by Luna Lauren Velez and Brian Tyree Henry, are making excuses for him to the counselor voiced by Rachel Dratch.  When Miles finally arrives, his parents learn of his desire to attend Columbia University. Mama Morales is not happy with this as she feels it is too far from their home in Brooklyn.  “Columbia is in New York,” Miles cries. “How is New York far from New York?”

Miles is now needed as the friendly neighbor Spider-Man again, a crime that also calls for his police officer father to show up there.  Mrs. Morales is about to leave the counseling session alone when Rachel Dratch's counselor says menacingly “He’s lying to you. Your son is lying to you.”

The footage left the theater content, even though the CG graphics were not in final form.  There is a lot to look forward to with 200 more characters to be revealed. Let us know who you would like to see as part of those 200.  Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases June 2, 2023 and is followed up with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on March 29, 2024.
