New Marvel Video Game 'Midnight Suns' Announced At Gamescom

Many fans tuned in to this year's live coverage of Gamescom to see just what new games we had in store over the coming year. And whilst the game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was easily the most anticipated, a few surprises were revealed, including the announcement of a new Marvel game called Marvel's Midnight Sons. This will be a tactical role-playing game and will apparently feature many characters from the world of Marvel, including the Midnight Sons, the X-Men, and the Avengers.

For those unfamiliar with the title characters, the Midnight Sons were a group of heroes who first came together in the early 1990's. The group was made up of Helstrom, Jennifer Kale, Morbius, Werewolf by Night, Doctor Strange, and Ghost Riders Danny Ketch and Johnny Blaze. The team was formed to help deal with the threat of Lilith's (Mother of All Demons) resurrection. Interestingly, this story will actually form part of the plot for the upcoming video game, along with elements being taken directly from the 1990s comic series Rise of the Midnight Sons.

Players will apparently take control of a new character named "The Hunter," a purely original character created for the game in conjunction with Marvel Comics, and have the ability to chose their own set of powers from a range of 40 abilities. On top of this, players will also get the opportunity to take control of other famous characters from the world of Marvel, including Iron Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Blade, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, and Magik.

The synopsis given for the game is:

"After centuries of sleep, Lilith, Mother of Demons, has been revived by Hydra through a twist of dark magic and science. Lilith stops at nothing to complete an ancient prophecy and bring back her evil master, Chthon. Pushed to the brink, the Avengers desperately look to fight fire with hellfire and enlist the help of the Midnight Suns - Nico Minoru, Blade, Magik and Ghost Rider - young heroes with powers deeply rooted in the supernatural, formed to prevent the very prophecy Lilith aims to fulfill. Together, they resurrect and ancient warrior - the Hunter, Lilith's forsaken child and the only hero known to have ever defeated her. In the face of fallen allies and the fate of the world at stake, it will be up to you to rise up against the darkness."

In terms of the actual gameplay itself, it has been reported that the combat style will be turn-based. However, between completing missions, players can upgrade their base of operations (called "The Abbey") . Within this space, they will also be able to walk around freely and interact with other heroes. These interactions can also help shape the gameplay and influence the story, along with those heroes' abilities.

This game will mark the first time certain characters have ever been properly playable, so there is quite a bit of hype for the game based on this, plus the decision to focus on a relatively unknown team and a darker story than what we are used to from the world of Marvel, means the game has something very unique and different to offer. Don't just take our word for it, though. For those who missed the trailer, you can check it out below:

In my humble opinion, I think the game looks fantastic, and I will definitely be checking it out when it's released. Be sure to let us know your thoughts on it as well. As always, though, we will bring you more updates as and when they are available.

Until next time!
