Sebastian Stan Continues To Tease Luke Skywalker Role With These Comments

With the ever-increasing influx of Star Wars media beyond the films, such as the Boba Fett streaming series and another miniseries starring Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's no surprise that fans are constantly wondering what's next. Which character are we going to see more of? Well, thanks to the uncanny resemblance between original Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill and actor Sebastian Stan, fans are clamoring for Stan to appear as the latest Luke Skywalker actor.

Luke has made an appearance in the latest Star Wars productions before. He made a memorable appearance in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, where he blew through a hoard of Dark Troopers to get to Grogu and his companions in a scene that most fans regard as the representation of what Luke Skywalker should have been, as opposed to the grumpy old man we got in the sequel trilogy. Hamill reprised his role thanks to a body double and de-aging technology, which has improved since the uncanny valley appearances of a young Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One.

However, even with the advanced technology, it still wasn't perfect. No matter how much they advance, computers will never be able to completely recreate an actual human. There will always be something slightly off. If Luke does get his own series, having Hamill reprise the role relying heavily on de-aging CGI is just impractical. That's where Sebastian Stan comes in.

Stan, who is most famous for portraying the Winter Soldier in several Marvel movies, has stated that he is open to portraying Skywalker if the opportunity arose. However, as of this writing, nothing has been tossed around yet, and Stan said that he would only believe the reports were true if "Mark Hamill calls me personally to tell me that he feels inclined to share this role with me." It's a good point; Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker. It's his role, full stop. That's not to say that there can never be somebody else who can play him. Alden Ehrenreich did a decent job portraying a younger Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story (though Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian was the much better performance) and the one positive that people have from the prequel trilogy outside of John Williams's music is Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. The idea of somebody other than Hamill playing Luke isn't completely ridiculous.

Both actors have also embraced the resemblance. Stan joked "Mark Hamill is my father, you know, and he knows that. And I call him every Christmas to tell him, 'I just want you to know I'm around.'" Hamill responded in kind with a tweet wishing his "son" a happy birthday with a message saying "I'm beginning to believe [Stan] might actually BE my son, cuz just like [Nathan Hamill & [Griffin Hamill], he never calls... he never writes..." Hamill finished his tweet with the hashtag 'ingrates'.

At this point, if Disney does decide to make a Luke-centered show or movie, they have to cast Stan in the titular role. They've doubtlessly heard the clamor from the internet, so casting somebody other than Stan would have the show or movie start off on the wrong foot with the internet complaining about casting before they saw a single shot. On the flipside, casting Stan gets people excited for it right away. Finally, a Luke that looks like actual Luke that doesn't have anything to do with computer de-aging technology! The Marvel movies have shown us that Stan has the acting chops to pull the role off. Whether we'll actually see a Luke show or film remains to be seen, but given how much Star Wars we've been getting, it's far from unlikely. When it does get made, there's already an actor waiting in the wings to wield the lightsaber.
