'Star Wars: Andor' Receives Release Update

Things have been oddly quiet about new Star Wars shows over the last few months, which is not out of character for Disney and Lucasfilm. However, dozens of shows are confirmed to be in production, and many of those are expected to release this year. The Obi-Wan show just got a trailer and release date last week, it is set to release May 25.

Andor is particularly interesting because it entered production around the time Obi-Wan Kenobi did. It has undergone several delays and setbacks, but things have again been quiet in recent months. While several people expect more trailers and release dates during Star Wars Celebration this year, there is no guarantee. Although, a new rumor may hint at Andor’s release date, and it makes a lot of sense.

The website BespinBulletin.com posted an article in February that Andor Season 2 would begin filming in the fall of this year. In November of last year they reported on Disney’s earnings call which stated that Andor would release in the fiscal fourth quarter of this year. That would put the release date somewhere between July 1st and September 30th. However, they recently tweeted (below) an exact month for the release date. After Disney and Marvel released the Ms. Marvel trailer, they retweeted it, saying;

If August really is the month Andor will release, it would make a lot of sense. Obi-Wan Kenobi will bleed into Ms. Marvel’s release, and then Ms. Marvel will get fairly close to that August release date for Andor. That would also create a good template for the Star Wars shows coming out the rest of the year as Andor will probably run into The Bad Batch in Autumn. The Bad Batch would then carry us to The Mandalorian Season 3, which will finish out the year. All in all, it seems like a pretty good schedule for Star Wars shows for the rest of the year.

However, Ms. Marvel is releasing sooner than Disney originally stated, pushing it up in the release schedule. Andor finished production in September of last year and appears to be using more practical effects than CG effects, created with things like the Volume, so it could also be ahead of schedule. If that is the case, Disney may be able to bump up Andor’s release along with Ms. Marvel. That could also be one of the big reveals everyone expects will appear at Star Wars Celebration this year. Of course, that is entirely speculation. It is a bit of a stretch to expect two shows early, but it is a possibility nonetheless.

Andor has had a production fraught with difficulties. It started filming towards the end of 2020, and filming in a pandemic has no shortage of difficulties. The fact that it is even able to release this year is a miracle and is a testament to the hard work everyone put in on it. Things have been quiet for Star Wars recently, but that only means that there are big things coming. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a ton of Star Wars announcements at Star Wars Celebration along with Andor’s trailer. Regardless of how many announcements come at Star Wars Celebration, Andor seems to be on track to release this year.
