There’s no denying there is power in social media. The outpouring of support for The Expanse after SyFy canceled the show after season three succeeded in garnering the support and acquisition of the series by Amazon, bringing three more seasons to make it one of the best sci-fi shows on TV.

It can have the opposite effect as well. When money is what fuels the industry, negative reactions can have just as strong an effect as an organized social media blitz to save a show. It’s arguable that the reaction to Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi led to the turbulent development surrounding Episode IX and it’s mixed reception. Many threw the phrase “fan service” at the final part of the saga.

The new season of The Mandalorian seems to have fallen victim to the downside of the internet as well. Fan reaction to the new season has been mixed at best, with many fans scoffing at the “embarassing” nature of Grogu’s training with other Mandalorian foundlings, to the odd inclusion of the Pirate Captain Gorian Shard, who looks like a mix between a gorilla and Swamp Thing.

Couple this with the return of Bob Iger and his stated refocus on movies and scaling back production on the television front, and it seems to have claimed its latest victim. According to reports, Iger met with Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni and pulled the plug on further seasons of The Mandalorian. Word has it Iger expressed “serious concerns about the quality of the storytelling, and at such a turbulent time in the industry, the decisions made for this season represent too great a risk of alienating Disney+’s wavering user base to continue further.”

Favreau had expressed excitement over future seasons, stating he has no endgame planned, but it seems that was wishful thinking.

With more shows on the horizon, and Iger making big moves, it remains to be seen whether the rumors of a Mandalorian spin-off actually pan out now.
