After the unprecedented scale and success of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, it is no wonder that fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are left wanting more and are awaiting the next opportunity to watch an ensemble of their favorite superheroes. With Marvel Phase 4 in its last leg, observant fans have already started piecing together what the next Endgame-level event could be and theories are ripe that the larger narrative is inching toward the plot of Secret Wars, an epic saga that involved a face-off between Marvel’s most powerful heroes and villains. And who can be trusted more than the Russo brothers to take up a project as challenging as that and recreate history?

In a recent chat with Deadline at the premiere of their Netflix movie, The Gray Man, the Russo brothers confessed their love for the Marvel comic run, Secret Wars, and said that “Our love for Marvel is based on the books that we read as kids, the books that we fell in love with. The one series that we adored growing up was Secret Wars. It’s incredibly ambitious. It would be bigger than Infinity War and Endgame. But it’s a massive undertaking. Those two movies were very hard to make. So, trying to imagine making another two movies even bigger than those two? We’re going to have to sleep on that.”

Now when it comes to the level of secrecy that is maintained around all Marvel movie plots, it seems like a big reveal that the duo is talking about the scope of the Secret Wars series. It is apparent that there are going to be two movies that would show the culmination of various plots, as was the case for the Infinity Saga, where 23 movies all came together and told one grand narrative. However, this time, it’s going to be bigger!

And indeed, there are sub-plots aplenty that hint at the possibility of a Secret Wars-like story coming together. Secret Wars (1984–85) was a 12-issue limited comic-book series that showed Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four battle Doctor Doom, Ultron, Doctor Octopus, and many others on a mysterious planet, the Battleworld. With the X-Men and Fantastic Four gradually making their entry into the MCU and the anticipation of a Doctor Doom project announcement, it seems like Marvel will have all it needs for Secret Wars. It’s also likely that the MCU movies could rely on the plot of the newer Secret Wars (2015–16) 9-part comic-book miniseries, which showed the formation of a Battleworld following multiple incursions throughout the multiverse, considering that we have recently been treated to the concept and consequences of incursions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Hopefully, the upcoming Marvel movies will leave enough breadcrumbs for fans to follow and in time we shall know if we will get to watch the Secret Wars saga on the big screen.
