Will Oscar Isaac Return To The MCU As Moon Knight?
Now that Season 1 of MCU's Moon Knight has ended, the success of the series is a major topic not only for the fan base but also for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) producers, writers, and actors. The first season premiered with six episodes on Disney+ and introduced a new hero to the MCU with some historical relevance to the Egyptian culture. Moon Knight is an American mercenary Marc Spector with dissociative identity disorder who gets his power from the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. His other personality is that of a good-natured British museum shop clerk Steven Grant.
Everyone is excited about where this series is going to lead. Moon Knight does take place in the MCU but as far as we know no other MCU characters crossover from other sections of the franchise. There was some thought about creating a scene with Kingo from Eternals for one of the Moon Knight episodes. The scene would involve the Eternals fighting a Deviant. However, the idea was eventually scrapped.

As you can imagine, I can’t speak to the business affairs of it all, but I can say that Oscar gives such a compelling performance as Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley. The audience becomes so emotionally engaged in the journey that Oscar takes us on, and I hope that journey extends. It’s a great question for Kevin about where this character may or may not land, but the way we leave Moon Knight at the end of this series, the character has the potential to flow nicely into many corners of the Marcel Cinematic Universe. And if Oscar wouldn’t have a committed to the degree that he did and create such an engaging, organic performance, we probably wouldn’t be saying that. We’d say, “Yes, maybe,” you know? But no, we’re saying, “I can’t wait to see if it happens,” and that is a testament to an actor working at the top of their craft.
Oscar Isaac’s situation is similar to Tom Holland’s situation with Spider-Man. Traditionally, the MCU franchise has actors sign contracts for multi-production deals, theoretically covering a period of ten years or more of their acting careers. However, with Tom Holland, Marvel allowed him to sign a contract that is much more flexible where the actor can discuss upcoming production appearances in an “open conversation” manner. Even though Oscar Isaac was contracted for only one season of Moon Knight, Marvel may use this approach with Oscar Isaac in the future, bringing him back when the franchise has figured out when and how to introduce Moon Knight into the larger MCU. No worries, though. Moon Knight’s part in the MCU is likely not over yet. There are a plethora of comic stories that can be adapted into an upcoming season or movie production.
In the comics, Moon Knight was written as having connections with the Avengers. However, as seen in the series, Moon Knight likes to work alone and does not follow orders very well. As the series’ Marc Spector/Moon Knight appears to have the same traits as his comic book counterpart, we may see him consider helping the Avengers in the future.
On the flip side, Marvel could still have big plans for Moon Knight even if he doesn’t join the Avengers. Moon Knight is a character similar to Doctor Strange and there is a lot the MCU can do with this character without officially joining the Avengers. Like Doctor Strange, we can have films following Moon Knight’s own agenda that is separate from the Avengers’, crossing over and teaming up with various other MCU characters as necessary. However, his violent past and loner attitude might make him better suited for short-term pacts with other heroes. After all, his justice is not as black and white as the Avengers’.
It looks like Marvel has some work to do. On the other hand, they do have the resources to make Moon Knight a profound character in the MCU. There is no telling what writers and producers will come up with. The fan base will have to wait and see what happens.
