Fan's Reaction To 'The VVitch'

The VVitch reaction

For fans of supernatural thrillers look no further than The VVitch, written and directed by Robert Eggers.  This film centers on the historical period preceding the Salem Witch Trials, set in 1630’s New England. The film opens with a courtroom/church building where a Puritan family of seven is forced to leave the town for what appears to be conflicting beliefs with the church at large. Eggers’ protagonist is the eldest child Thomasin, played by Anya Taylor Joy. Thomasin is set up to be accused of witchcraft throughout the film. Other characters include mom – Katherine, dad – William, brother – Caleb, twins Mercy and Jonas, and baby Samuel.

The family leaves the town to live in the foreboding forest. The jump scare is not a tactic utilized in this film. The historical context is highly respected including the scenography, lighting, dialogue, and musical score. These elements create the feeling of evil in the air. In the blink of an eye, the baby disappears. Katherine is overtaken with grief. William’s pride is a barrier for not only himself but the whole family. Something unholy is hunting this family. Thomasin will have some choices to make. Culture Slate’s Catherine Carter reacts to the film below!
