Giancarlo Esposito Wields The Darksaber Once Again At Fan Expo Boston

Moff Gideon

At this year's Fan Expo Boston, Giancarlo Esposito was in attendance and participated in a panel discussion. When he's on the marquee, chances are they’ll talk Star Wars. It’s not difficult to get fans excited, Star Wars is an easy sell. Still, the actor provided something extra for Star Wars fans who needed to bridge the six-month wait until The Mandalorian drops in February 2023.

Giancarlo Esposito admitted he performed most of his stunts in The Mandalorian. Noteworthy among his stunts to date is the first duel between Moff Gideon and Din Djarrin in Season 2’s The Rescue. The scene proved that Esposito, like Gideon, is the Darksaber’s master. It would not be too much to assume then that the audience anticipated a showcase of his stunt-fighting skills during the event. He obliged, agreeing to perform an impromptu lightsaber duel with the host. The prop handed to Esposito was not a replica of one of the Jedi or Sith lightsabers, it was the iconic Darksaber. Although it lacked its high-pitched hum, the blade’s white halo more than made up for this technicality. No sound, no problem, Esposito provided the saber hum even if it was for the normal-variant lightsaber. Recognizing Esposito’s prowess, the host deferred:

“I’ll start blocking and you just take us through.”

With his partial Gideon persona on, and keeping his promise “of not going easy”, the majority of the swordplay saw Esposito unrelenting in his attack. In the end, unlike Gideon, he wins.

He has portrayed characters in more than a handful of successful TV series, but as the Star Wars universe continues to expand odds are he will be remembered more as Moff Gideon, the wielder of the Darksaber.

As an aside, the Darksaber is such a cool weapon it may one day become the most popular non-character in the Star Wars universe or at least more famous than Jar Jar Binks.
