The video game industry has become a tough spot for developers and creatives in recent years. While more than 10,500 people lost their jobs in 2023, already more than 6,000 were laid off in the first months of 2024. One of the few silver linings is that Stig Asmussen, Respawn Entertainment's former game director, who left the company last September, has set up a new independent video game studio: Giant Skull.

The first game helmed by the mastermind behind video-game blockbusters like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, its sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, as well as the God of War series, will be an AAA single-player-focused action-adventure, built in Unreal Engine 5, fitting one of Giant Skull's vision to create "gameplay-driven, story immersed action-adventure games set in captivating worlds".

Joining Asmussen will be Jon Carr, technical director on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor; Patrick Murphy, an art director who has games like FortniteValorant, League of Legends, and God of War on his resume, Lauren McLemore, a lead producer on Fortnite, Jeff Magers, design director on the Star Wars Jedi games, Brian Campbell, formerly animation director at Epic Games as well as other veteran game developers from Epic Games, Riot Games, and Rocksteady Studios.

“We have assembled a talented team renowned for immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal, and our goal is to craft a rich universe that players will want to lose themselves in for years to come,” Asmussen said about his new company and co-workers.

“We’re creating something special and have been fortunate enough to assemble an incredible initial team of developers who are extremely passionate and experienced in creating genre-defining, third person action-adventures,” added Giant Skull's CFO/COO Anthony Scott.

The announcement of the foundation of Giant Skull and its first project is pleasant news for gamers. And developers, who were hit by the ongoing staff suspensions might find a new employer. And maybe the recently canceled Star Wars first-person-shooter, rumored to focus on a (not "The") Mandalorian, will find a new home at Giant Skull.
