Defeated.  Conquered.  That is how we last saw Giancarlo Esposito’s character Moff Gideon in the Season Two finale of The Mandalorian.  But, just like the mythological bird that rises from the ashes after its seeming demise, Esposito shared with TV Line that his character will also be a “phoenix”:

“You always want to see the phoenix rise from the ashes. Or, you want to see a nefarious villain rise from the ashes,” Esposito noted with a wink. “And believe me, he will.”

This turn of events will prove interesting for Din Djarin. Our Mandalorian was reunited with Grogu during The Book of Boba Fett.  When the events of The Mandalorian resume, he will be on his way back to Mandalore to prove his worthiness after the Armorer stripped him of his Mandalorian status.  Din will also have to settle the situation with Bo-Katan, as she was anticipating regaining the Darksaber from Moff Gideon in combat, only to have Din Djarin win the Darksaber from him in a fight.  Throwing Moff Gideon back into the mix, after it had seemed that he had been dealt with, especially with the other circumstances coming to a head, will definitely up the ante.  Soon after Star Wars Celebration, Esposito told ET Online that although he will start the season behind bars,

“Yes, it’s assumed he is behind bars. I think we could have an opportunity to see him escape those chains that bind him,” Esposito said of Gideon’s current whereabouts, teasing that he’s not just sitting idly by. “We want to see a guy who is a mastermind who has an idea for the future that no one else has. And so, we want to know what that is and we want to know if that’s good or bad.”

It doesn’t seem that his character will only make a one-episode appearance either.  Esposito went on to say in his TV Line interview:

“You’re going to get some Moff Gideon. I mean, I always want more Moff Gideon — I’ve got to be honest with you! But, you know, you’re going to get a good amount of Moff Gideon.”

The Mandalorian has a March 1, 2023 release date on Disney +.  Along with Esposito and Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, other returning cast members include Katee Sackhoff as Bo Katan, Carl Weathers as Greef Carga, Emily Swallow as the Armorer, and Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto.
