Ahead of its July 13th release, the Netflix series Sonic Prime dropped its first episode on YouTube as a Fourth of July present for Sonic fans. This episode focuses heavily on Shadow the Hedgehog as he fights against Sonic, who he sees as reckless and the cause of the current state of the multiverse. Shadow aims to steal Sonic’s tech to enter the gateways to the shatterverses himself, but Sonic is not giving Nine’s gadgets up without a fight. Fan's reaction to this episode was mostly positive, with many praising Shadow’s more mature characterization and how it acts as a foil to a more reckless and arrogant Sonic.

Early reviews of the whole season from critics have also been positive, with IGN giving the new season a 9 out of 10, praising it for how complete it feels compared to season one’s more “fragmented” nature. Shadow’s voice (Ian Hanlin) has also been highly praised, and many fans feel his Shadow to be a breath of fresh air compared to how the character has been portrayed for the past 10 years. While this only gives fans of the show a taste of what is yet to come, they will not have to wait long, as season two of Sonic Prime speeds onto Netflix on July 13th of this year.
