Wizards Of The Coast Will Leave The OGL 1.0 In Place After Fan Backlash Over The Decision To Update It

After a huge amount of controversy, and much vocal debate from the community, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) confirmed that they will are no longer planning to make their divisive and unpopular changes to their Dungeon and Dragons Open Game License (OGL). This U-turn came about after an overwhelming wave of petitions, open letters, feedback pieces, and social campaigns followed their proposed changes to the OGL and 5th Edition rules.

Kyle Brink, Executive Producer of D&D made a statement on D&D Beyond confirming that due to the overwhelmingly negative feedback to the proposed changes, the following would be coming into immediate effect:

“We are leaving OGL 1.0a in place, as is. Untouched.
We are also making the entire SRD 5.1 available under a Creative Commons license.
You choose which you prefer to use.”

This has in part been brought about by the rise in online streamers and the prominence of the game in the Netflix Original Stranger Things. WotC is owned by Hasbro Inc. and holds licenses for multiple popular franchises such as Transformers, GI Joe, Power Rangers, Monopoly, Peppa Pig, and Nerf Products.
