The first issue of the new Star Wars comic miniseries starring Sana Starros hits the shelves this week. Written by Justina Ireland and drawn by Pere Pérez and Jay David Ramos, the series will follow the titular Sana as she goes up directly against the Galactic Empire. If you’re planning on picking up this comic but are still unfamiliar with Sana as a character, this is the article for you!

Born on Nar Shaddaa, Sana was a member of the Starros Clan who left to become an archaeologist. Studying under Sava Toob-Nix at the University of Bar’leth, Sana shared a class with fellow aspiring student Chelli Lona Aphra. Sana would become fond of her classmate and would help Aphra through tough spots. They would eventually start dating. However, their romance ended on a sour note when Aphra abandoned Sana and began collecting artifacts without her.

Sana would go on to become a well-known mercenary in the galaxy. One of her first ventures was attending the auction of a device called Phylanx Redux Transmitter, in which she was nearly killed by the competing crime syndicate Crimson Dawn. Sana attempted to recover the transmitter by kidnapping Mozeen Parapa, leader of the Parapa Cartel on the planet Takodana. While there, she was met by Han Solo and Chewbacca, who agreed to help her in exchange for a cut of her payment. Parapa eventually revealed the transmitter’s location and was taken back to his cartel. However, this would only be Sana’s first of many confrontations with Han.

Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Sana would reunite with Han and pose as his wife in order to pull off a heist. However, Han ultimately abandoned Sana and made off with her cut of the loot. In turn, Sana would hold a grudge toward Han and go on the hunt for him. She eventually found him after the destruction of the first Death Star and intended to recollect her half of the bounty. However, her plans changed when Luke Skywalker was captured by Grakkus the Hutt on Nar Shaddaa. Her conscience taking over, Sana decided to help Han and his current flame, Princess Leia Organa infiltrate the Hutt’s fighting pits and rescue the young Jedi. Following this, Sana would come to work with the growing Rebellion on a number of missions. One such mission was to relocate another of Sana’s old associates, Doctor Aphra.

Leia would have Sana help her bring Aphra to the Rebel Alliance’s Sunspot Prison. However, the prison was attacked by a group of Imperial mercenaries and Leia and Sana were forced to help Aphra escape in order to retake the prison. As they dealt with the mercenaries, Aphra betrayed Sana once again and left her and Leia behind after commandeering an escape pod. Sana would go on to participate in other Rebellion-related missions, including ones at the Harbinger, Ktath’atn, and even one alongside Lando Calrissian. Eventually, Sana did manage to cross paths with Aphra once again.

At the behest of General Hera Syndulla, Sana was sent to retrieve Aphra from the Empire’s Accresker Jail and get information vital to the Rebellion. Upon reaching the prison, she found that Aphra was already in the middle of escaping. The resulting chaos soon culminated in the prison being discarded by the Empire and sent hurdling into the Rebel-sympathizing planet Tiferep Major with the prisoners still on board. Having a rare change of heart, Aphra decided to save Sana, allowing her to escape before the prison was ultimately destroyed.

Afterward, Sana refocused her energy on helping the Rebellion. Shortly before the Battle of Hoth, she smuggled the Millennium Falcon crew to an informant on Brentaal IV. However, she was captured in the process and interrogated by Sergeant Kreel of SCAR Squadron. Though the Rebels were able to escape, Sana decided to abandon the Rebellion and take less risky bounties. This decision ultimately led her back to, who else, Aphra.

Sana is currently starring alongside Aphra in the Doctor Aphra comic series from Alyssa Wong. At this point, they have gone through plenty of wacky adventures together, from sabotaging the auction of a High Republic ship to fighting an ancient dark side AI that has taken control of Aphra’s body. This is all the more reason to be excited about the story Justina Ireland has in store for her character.
