Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen took a bow as The Flash series finale aired on May 24, 2023. While fans are sad to see this CW’s version of The Flash go after nine seasons, the showrunners have left them with something to look forward to. In the final scenes of the series finale, we see the introduction of more speedsters to the Arrowverse.

After having a final battle with Cobalt Blue (played by Rick Cosnett), Barry is seen explaining the Speed Force to his and Iris’s newly born daughter Nora. He tells her that though the lightning chose him to become The Flash, he is now going to be the one doing the choosing, thus revealing that he plans to share his gift of speed with others. He is then seen sending out lightning bolts that share his powers with Avery Ho, Max Mercury, and Jess Chambers. While Avery Ho (played by Piper Curda) has appeared in the series before, Max and Jess are introduced to the Arrowverse for the first time.

Max Mercury (played by Trevor Carroll) is a popular version of The Flash in the comics who was first introduced in The Flash Vol 2 #76. In the comics, Max is from the early 19th century and has received his powers through a shaman who drew a mysterious lightning bolt on his chest. He often tutors other speedsters on the deeper truths of the Speed Force and has been given the nickname ‘The Zen Guru of Speed.’ He is seen time-hopping while chasing foes, often assuming alternative identities.

Jess Chambers (played by Hana Destiny Huggins) in the comics is the latest version of The Flash. They came from Earth 11 to Earth 0 to warn the superheroes of a major conspiracy but chose to remain behind and ultimately join the Justice League. Jess Chambers was introduced in Generations Shattered #1.

The origin stories of Max Mercury and Jess Chambers are quite different in the comics than what was shown in the series finale; however, fans are happy to latch on to the promise of there being a possibility of the Arrowverse continuing in a new form. As the showrunner of The Flash, Eric Wallace, said in a recent interview, “I've wrapped up a lot of things in the series finale, and it ends on a very hopeful note that shows you how the future of the Arrowverse could continue in some way, shape, or form. It hopefully gives people closure but also some hope for the future, because otherwise, it's very sad to think that there will be no more crossovers, that there won't be an Arrowverse after May 24. That saddens me because I love it so much, and it was such a big part of not just my life but a whole fan base's life."

As fans, we can only hope that we’ll see the Arrowverse assemble in the future.
