10. Orphan (2009)

This is one of the most underrated horror films in my opinion. The film is creepy, can be a bit uncomfortable at times, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The twist at the end cemented this as one of the top ten movies that need to be watched during the spooky season!

You can find this film and its prequel, Orphan First Kill, on Paramount +.

9. Halloweentown (1998)

Most millennials will have this film on their watch list already, but for those that aren't familiar, this is an absolute staple! Halloweentown is a family-friendly film that everyone can enjoy. It brings magic, sibling rivalry, and just a touch of darkness to the table in an unforgettable tale!

You can find this film and the rest of the Halloweentown franchise on Disney+.

8. IT (2017)

While Tim Curry’s Pennywise will forever be iconic, the remake masterfully brought more gore and thrills to an already terrifying tale. Bill Skarsgård fills the clown’s shoes perfectly and will make even the bravest horror fans jump at least once or twice.

You can find this film on Netflix.

7. Poltergeist (1982)

This classic will never go out of style. Over the last 40 years, this film has kept viewers intrigued and also made them scared of TV static! I’m not sure which is scarier though, the horrors on camera or the supposed curses hiding behind it.

You can find this film on HBO Max.

6. The Shining (1980)

While The Shining may not have aged well with all fans, it remains a cult classic. Stanley Kubrick’s filming style has been called into question for decades, but no one can deny the genius in the jump scares and visuals in the film.

You can find this film on HBO Max.

5. Hocus Pocus (1993)

I’m sure this film is on most watch lists this time of year, but it would’ve felt wrong to leave it off! Hocus Pocus is a family-friendly classic that will always be on Halloween fans’ radar during the spooky season. I think the film is even more fun as an adult viewer because you can catch more of the jokes!

You can find this film and its much-anticipated sequel, releasing September 30, on Disney +.

4. Fear Street Trilogy (2021)

Based on the YA horror series by R.L. Stine, the films became an instant favorite of both new and old fans. While the films are based on a YA series, the movies were definitely created with Stine’s older fans in mind as they are filled with gore and scares. The films are set in 1996, 1978, and 1666 and use a flashback style of storytelling to keep fans guessing.

You can find all three films on Netflix.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven is one of the greatest horror directors of all time, and while he has several films that could have been on this list, we had to stick with the OG. Freddy Krueger will forever be a slasher movie icon with his one-liners and razor-sharp glove. Craven’s use of cinematography is just as impressive in 2022 as it was in 1984.

You can find this film on Netflix.

2. Scream (1996)

Another Wes Craven entry that no spooky season watchlist would be complete without! The Scream franchise as a whole brings scares for every generation, but the original will always hold a special place in the hearts of many fans. The film’s use of strong female characters and a blend of horror comedy has made it a forever classic.

You can find this film and the rest of the Scream franchise on Paramount +.

1. Halloween (1978)

Ending with the ultimate classic and spooky season favorite! Halloween is often considered to be the start of the slasher trend that led to audiences getting characters such as Freddy and Jason. Although the film has been remade and rebooted, the original still stands alone as one of the best horror films of all time in my opinion.

You can find this film available to rent on Amazon Prime Video.

This is my list of the top 10 movies you should watch this spooky season! Do you agree with my list? What’s your favorite scary movie?
