Who says romance and comedy can’t get along?

The two genres encompass many motion picture collection staples on their own. However, there are just as many films that take the genres of romance and comedy and combine them to make the perfect recipe for a film that both tugs at our heartstrings and warms us with hilarity. The following films are examples of this:

10. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

I'm starting off with a beloved geeky romance! Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a quirky example of a romantic comedy. It navigates the complexities of young love while including hilarious fantasy elements and an intense video game aesthetic, managing to be funny throughout.

Author’s note: A favourite sequence of mine in this movie is the fight scene at Toronto’s Casa Loma. Specifically, the sequence on the stairs. I climbed those stairs in 2021; if you’re not physically fit, climbing those stairs is a pain in the butt. Translate that to how intensely Lucas Lee rides the long rail and wipes out at the end, and it seems even more absurd.

9. Mamma Mia!

A delightful musical comedy that encapsulates the development of unconventional romances and shows that traditions don’t have to be followed for people to be ultimately happy. This cinematic adaptation of ABBA’s classic hit weaves a tale that is bound to give viewers both feelings of hilarity and warm fuzzies in their hearts.

8. The Holiday

This is a romantic tale of finding love in the unlikeliest places and of the relationships that develop alongside that love. The story of a widower father of two having a romance shows that love can still be found after tragedy.

7. Shrek

Just because most people consider a duckling, or, in this case, an ogre ugly, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t beautiful and that they deserve to be loved like everyone else. It also shows the importance of having friends to help you along the way while having hilarious fun the whole time.

Conclusion? In the morning, I’m making WAFFLES.

6. Shrek 2

It’s a comedy about ogres, humans, and talking animals. What’s not hilarious about that? However, this hilarious rendition of the traditional fairy tale genre also shows how true love can be long-lasting, can weather any challenges, and can happen in unconventional pairings.

5. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

This movie is a great portrayal of romance developing alongside the chaos of having a large, closely-knit family. It shows the unintentional comedy of a person trying to find their own way in love and life, while still maintaining a place in a large social group.

4. Much Ado About Nothing

It is a beautiful rendering of a Shakespearean classic. Modern actors bring this tale to life for a modern audience while still maintaining elements like the traditional Shakespearean dialogue, showcasing the timeless comedic elements of life and the power of love.

3. The Princess Bride

A classic beloved by many, The Princess Bride maintains a great sense of fairy tale while excelling in situational comedy. This only makes the story more impactful while also showing the endurance of true love through whatever challenges might stand in the way.

2. Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner

A classic romantic comedy with an important message, this movie shows that anyone can find love with anyone. It also shows both the comedic and dramatic elements of social commentary and of going against convention and finding true happiness and the changes that causes in people.

Author’s note: Just as poignant as the romances portrayed on screen, the real-life romance of stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy would make a compelling film on its own. Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner was Spencer Tracy’s last film, with the actor dying before its release; as a result, Katharine Hepburn refused to see the finished film.
