If you have spent more than five minutes on TikTok within the last few weeks, you have probably seen thousands of videos about “Slasher Summer”. As a horror fan, I couldn’t believe that I had never heard of this, and I assumed I was not alone. Apparently, “Slasher Summer” is not only an aesthetic that many fans live by, but it is also something that is celebrated during July and August by watching slasher films or novels that are set in the summer. I did a deep dive and made a list of the best slasher films and TV shows currently streaming so that you can join in on the fun of this new tradition!

8. The Burning (1981)

he Burning is the definition of a summer slasher film. After a group of camp counselors pull a horrible prank (that goes wrong) on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy, they leave him for dead. Years later, the vengeful Cropsy returns to the camp to enact his revenge on a new group of counselors.

The Burning is available to stream on Paramount+

X not only kicked off a new horror trilogy but also secured Mia Goth and Jenna Ortega as modern-day Scream Queens. The film follows a group of actors who travel to rural Texas hoping to make an adult film. Unfortunately, things go horrifyingly wrong, leaving them fighting for their lives.

X is available to stream on Paramount+.

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic, and as a native Texan, I grew up with all the stories and urban legends about the film and how it was “based on a true story”. I’m not a fan of the original film, as the film’s set was a horrifying place for the actors leading to many of them getting hurt and/or sick. The 2003 reboot is a surprisingly solid film and better than the original, in my opinion. The film follows a group of young adults who are fleeing the United States military draft. After encountering a horrifying hitchhiker, they find themselves stranded in rural Texas. After seeking help at a nearby house, they are picked off one by one by Leatherface and his deranged family.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is available to stream on Vudu.

5. American Horror Story: 1984 (2019)

American Horror Story’s early seasons gave us some of the best horror content on television. My very favorite season, and the one that is perfect for this list, is season 9, American Horror Story: 1984. This season follows a group of camp counselors who agree to work at a summer camp that is being reopened after a massacre that took place 14 years prior. While this might sound like your run-of-the-mill summer slasher, it isn’t! There are some great twists, a nice touch of pop culture, and some great supernatural elements.

All seasons of American Horror Story are available to stream on Hulu.

4. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

This is one of the best classic summer slasher films! Unlike the other films on this list, this one doesn’t take place in the middle of nowhere or at a summer camp. This one takes place in North Carolina and utilizes the ocean as another character. The film follows four friends who, on the night of their high school graduation, accidentally hit a man that was standing in the road. After believing him to be dead, they dispose of his body and swear never to talk about it again. When the friends return to their hometown, the man returns to seek his revenge. This movie has some seriously underrated twists and a surprisingly complex story.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is available to stream on Netflix

3. Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Sleepaway Camp follows shy and traumatized Angela Baker, who has been forced by her aunt to go to Camp Arawak with her cousin Ricky. An unknown killer attacks the camp and leads to one of the most jaw-dropping killer reveals in horror history.

Sleepaway Camp is available to stream on Peacock

2. Friday The 13th (1980 & 2009)

No summer slasher list could be complete without including the OG. Friday the 13th set the standard for summer slashers and still holds up more than four decades later. The classic follows a group of counselors who have agreed to help reopen Camp Crystal Lake after it had been closed due to a massacre. The counselors are picked off one by one as an unknown killer stalks the camp. The 2009 reboot is almost as good as the original, and I love that they chose to do something different while still paying homage to the original. The remake follows a group of college students who are vacationing at their friend’s lake house. A young man who is looking for his missing sister stumbles upon the group, and when they travel too close to the grounds of Camp Crystal Lake, Jason unleashes pure terror on them and anyone that tries to help.

Both Friday the 13th films are available to stream on Paramount+.

1. Fear Street: Part Two - 1978 (2021)

Fear Street: Part Two - 1978

The entire Fear Street trilogy is amazing, but it is the second film that truly embodies the summer slasher vibe. The film follows a camp that is split between teens from Shadyside and Sunnyvale who battle against each other to complete a camp-wide game of capture the flag. Unfortunately, the curse that resides over Shadyside strikes as the sun goes down, leaving the Shadyside teens fighting for their life.

The Fear Street trilogy is available to stream on Netflix.
