Bethesda Confirms 'Fallout 5' Will Release After ‘Elder Scrolls VI’

Three individuals in power armor from Fallout

Since the flop of Fallout 76 has left a bad taste in wastelanders' mouths, fans have been itching to go back to the same style for the franchise. Well, time to dust off your Pip-Boys and stock your stimpaks, Fallout 5 has been officially confirmed by none other than Todd Howard. While it is still far off, it is certainly in Bethesda's plans for the future. In a recent interview with IGN, Howard mentioned the new game and when we should expect to see it.

With the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase showing off what is to come from the companies, Bethesda's new single-player RPG Starfield has gained a lot of buzz. After years of discussion, a gameplay trailer finally dropped for Starfield with a release scheduled for next year. Todd Howard then spoke with IGN about what is next for Bethesda after Starfield is released:

"Yes, Elder Scrolls VI is in pre-production and, you know, we're going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate's pretty full going forward for a while. We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well."

Back in his interview with IGN in 2021, Howard admitted how there had been little development on the next Fallout game aside from them knowing which location it will be based on. He also mentioned that another developer could potentially take the reigns:

"We've worked with other [developers] from time to time - I can't say what's going to happen. You know, we have a one-pager on Fallout 5, what we want to do."

At the time of the interview, Microsoft owned both Obsidian and Bethesda. The idea of those two coming companies coming together is purely speculation, though it is something that many fans have been asking for.

The confirmation of Fallout 5 happening is bittersweet for longtime fans of the series. However, while it has been confirmed to be the next game to be released after Elder Scrolls VI, there has yet to even be a release date set for that game. Plus, there is little known about that game whatsoever, aside from the cinematic trailer released four years ago. It will most likely be a long wait for the next Fallout, but at least we know it is finally on the way.
